Social Media, Mobile and the New Web | Q4 Blog

Last month, Brian Solis, who is the Principal at Altimeter Group published a very interesting post on his website, looking at some of the findings that were included in the Nielsen 2012 Social Media Report. Comparing the findings from 2012 to 2011 provides a fascinating look into the rapid growth of social media use over the past year.

Time spent on social networks has grown across the board on multiple platforms. The study and Brian?s commentary gives a great look into the developing new web. Below are some of the highlights that we found most interesting. We suggest that anyone who is interested in the growing world of online communication to check out Brian?s full post.

Social Connection is up in 2012

We can see from the findings that the majority of social interaction on the Internet is still done through PC computers. However, looking at the growth of both tablet and phone use, we can see that the future of online social interaction is diversifying. People are now able to take the experience of social networking on the go, sharing their thoughts and experiences in real time and staying connected with the people in their networks. Social media provides us with a constant stream of information and mobile technology is the perfect platform to access that information.

The Mobile Web is the future for Social Networking

In the chart above, we get a better understanding of how valuable apps are to people using mobile devices. Apps make it easier for users to access social media because it saves log in info, makes use of GPS capability and is optimized to fit the specifications of a specific device. Apps are also able to send notifications to a user?s phone so that they can keep up with their network in real time.

Comparing the two charts above, we can see that while unique visits to social media sites on PC computers declined in 2012, time spent on social media increased across all devices. This suggests that people are using their mobile devices to access social media on the go.? The increased time spent indicates that people are more engaged on their social networks.

Mobile technology has changed where and how we connect with people

This info-graphic provides a very detailed look into how and where people are using social media. The majority is still desktop computers with smartphones coming in second and tablets coming in third with a 12% growth from the last year. Perhaps a little too in-depth, 32% of people between the ages 18-24 use social media to pass the time while in the bathroom. While that may not seem like the most useful information, the study also found that 51% of people between the ages of 25-34 use social media in the office. This shows that social networking has found its way into the work place and offers a great new channel to reach professional contacts.

Why are we connecting with one another?

The final graphic gives some key insights into why people want to connect to one another through social media. It should be no surprise that the main factor in someone wanting connect with someone is knowing that person in real life. Face to face interaction will always be the most powerful way that people connect to one anther. After that we see that people want to make sure that they are keeping up with what is going on and connecting with people who are their mutual friends. The forth most popular reason for using social media is to access business networks. This is obviously the primary function of LinkedIn, but any savvy social media user can recognize the great opportunities for building and maintaining a professional network through social media.

At the very bottom of the chart there is a great wordcloud that collects the feelings people have after they participate in social media. While the most popular answers are all positive ?like ?connected?, ?informed? and ?excited? there are still some people that feel overwhelmed and anxious about social media. What this points to is a bit of learning curve. As social media continues to find its place in our lives, both personally and professionally, people will grow comfortable with it.

These findings from Nielson give us an excellent look into the growth of social media over the past year. As people continue to grow more confident and savvy in their use of social media, we can expect to see user engagement rise. Both Smartphones and Tablets have given people the ability to stay connected wherever they go. From the trends that we have seen above, the future of social media will take place on a mobile device.
