Will the Iowa caucuses be a Cain-Romney race? (The Week)

New York ? Cain and Romney are polling neck and neck in the critical early voting state ? even though they've only visited Iowa a combined four times this year

Just two months before the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses officially kick off the Republican presidential race, an eagerly awaited Des Moines Register poll shows a virtual tie for the lead, with businessman Herman Cain at 23 percent and former Massachusetts Gov.?Mitt Romney at 22 percent. Their nearest rival is Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), who polls at 12 percent. The race's other Texan, Gov. Rick Perry, clocks in at 7 percent, while this summer's Ames straw poll winner, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), is at 8 percent. Of course, the race is still fluid ?? particularly after Sunday night's bombshell Politico report charging that Cain was twice accused by female employees of inappropriate "sexually suggestive behavior" in the 1990s. Still, with 71 percent of likely GOP caucus-goers saying business experience is more important than political experience, is Iowa becoming a two-man race between business candidates Romney and Cain?

Iowa is still Romney vs. "not-Romney": This poll is best summed up: "Elimination threatens several not-Romneys," says Jennifer Rubin at?The Washington Post. Cain is just the latest "main vessel for the not-Romney votes." Still, it will be hard for his rivals to "puncture the Cain bubble" before Iowans caucus. And even if Cain lacks "staying power after Iowa," he could easily end the race for Perry and other second-stringers. Romney's steady mid-20s could also be enough for "a surprise win."
"New Iowa poll: Elimination threatens several not-Romneys"

If Romney and Cain want to win, they need to show up: Right now this looks like "a two-way race at the top between largely absentee candidates," since Cain and Romney have visited Iowa a combined four times in 2011, says Jason Noble in The Des Moines Register. But 59 percent of caucus-goers are still on the fence, and you win caucuses with organization. Unless Cain and Romney make "heavier investments in a ground game," the Iowa race is still wide open.
"Absence has worked for Cain, Romney, but they'll need a ground game"

Iowa represents a real gamble for Romney:?The former Massachusetts governor got burned badly in Iowa in 2008, when he invested heavily in the state only to get blown out by Mike Huckabee,?says John Heilemann in?New York. And though Romney's message to Iowa this year "hasn't quite been 'Drop dead,'" it's been pretty close. Unlike Cain, Romney doesn't need Iowa. He's focused on New Hampshire. And yet, with Iowa GOP operatives expecting Cain to implode, like Perry and Bachmann before him, Romney could plausibly win Iowa with just a little push. That would be a "knockout out blow to Perry," Romney's only real rival. But if he makes a play and loses, Romney could be humiliated and lose it all ? again.

Facebook value overstated, study finds

Researchers warn of a social networking bubble in the offing

Web edition : Friday, October 28th, 2011

Claims that Facebook is worth $100 billion or even just $65 billion grossly overvalue the company, say researchers who have done a simple calculation of the company's worth. The pair of econophysicists warns that inflated value estimates for sites such as Facebook, Zynga and Twitter are signs that a social networking financial bubble is gaining steam.

"It's not the same volume of the dot-com bubble. That was really widespread," says coauthor Didier Sornette. Nevertheless, he and colleague Peter Cauwels conclude, a social networking bubble ? and its impending pop ? loom.

The ETH Z?rich researchers argue that determining the value of social networking sites is vastly simpler than with other companies, because there's a relatively direct link between the number of users and profit. This boils the math down to a simple equation: the number of users times the profit per user. Calculated that way, Facebook's value is probably in the neighborhood of $15 billion to $20 billion, the team reports online October 6 at arXiv.org.

Figuring out the number of people with Facebook accounts was easy: The company reported reaching 750 million users in July.

Figuring out how much each user is worth was a little harder. Because the company is private, the researchers had to estimate revenues and profits. Based on reports bandied about by financial industry insiders over the years, the team calculated an average profit margin of 29 percent. This yields an estimated profit per user of $1 per year.

Then the researchers plugged these numbers into some simple growth models. Assuming unlimited exponential growth yields a value of $32.9 billion. But that also quickly inflates the number of users beyond the world's population, which isn't very realistic.

So the team used a more moderate growth calculation that's favored by ecologists to estimate things like rabbit population size, which would grow exponentially if it weren't limited by real-world factors like predators and disease. This trajectory accounts for things that can be expected to slow Facebook's growth, such as future competition or limits to the expansion of Internet access in the developing world.

That approach pegged Facebook's value at somewhere between $15.3 billion and $20.2 billion.

The math used in the assessment is solid, says Theodore Modis, physicist and founder of Growth Dynamics, a strategic forecasting firm based in Lugano, Switzerland. "It's a wonderfully robust result and suggests that the market value for Facebook has been grossly overestimated," he says.

Others find the assessment too simplistic. "The math is interesting, but it's mute about a lot of important things," says marketing scientist Peter Fader of the University of Pennsylvania. For example, the analysis assumes that all Facebook users remain users forever. Customer retention can have a huge influence on a firm's value, says Fader. "This paper doesn't fully account for phenomena that we know exist," he says.

Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa

Sabi Sand is South Africa's oldest and most exclusive private game reserve. It spans 65,000 hectares and shares a 50 km unfenced border with Kruger National Park. It's the birthplace of sustainable wildlife tourism in South Africa and has only ever been a wilderness area. It's part of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, the largest conservation area in Southern Africa. Sabi Sand Game Reserve is renowned for its exceptional leopard sighti';//-->ngs and up-close wildlife encounters. The reserve's wildlife checklist counts more than 500 bird species and over 140 kinds of animals. It's home to all of the African big five - lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, rhinoceros - and several endangered species - wild dog, honey badgers, oxpeckers, ground hornbill, and several species of bats. Sabi Sand's varied landscape includes riverine forest, acacia groves, grasslands, and, of course, bush savanna. Termite mounds are one of its most distinctive features. The Sabie and Sand rivers provide it with a source of water. What's more, the accommodation at Sabi Sand ranges from affordable to luxury and many of the reserve's safari lodges and camps welcome children. Commonwealth leader summit ends in Australia (AP)

PERTH, Australia ? Commonwealth nation leaders insisted Sunday that they had made sweeping progress at their biennial summit, despite failing to agree on a key human rights reform recommended by a group that questioned the forum's very relevance.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who had pushed for the appointment of a human rights watchdog during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting ? or CHOGM ? said the forum had still made progress by strengthening the role the Commonwealth can play when dealing with nations accused of human rights abuses.

"This will provide for an earlier and more constructive engagement by the Commonwealth and the Secretary General where countries are veering from the path of democracy," Gillard told reporters in the Western Australia city of Perth, where the three-day meeting of 53 Commonwealth nation leaders came to a close on Sunday.

A report by the forum's Eminent Persons Group, which was set up during the last summit to help raise the Commonwealth's profile, had recommended the leaders appoint a human rights commissioner. The forum has been hit with repeated questions of its effectiveness in preventing human rights abuses, particularly in Sri Lanka, which is slated to host the next summit.

Sri Lanka been under intense pressure from human rights groups and countries including the U.S. to investigate allegations of possible war crimes during the final months of its 26-year war with Tamil Tiger separatists, which ended in 2009.

Gillard said Australia supported appointing a human rights watchdog, but several other countries had raised concerns. The prime minister said a group of Commonwealth foreign ministers would examine the proposal further and report their findings to the leaders at a later date.

The forum did give one of its internal groups more power to intervene earlier when Commonwealth nations are accused of human rights abuses or undemocratic behavior. Previously, the forum was restricted to either suspending or expelling such countries from the bloc.

The Eminent Persons Group was also highly critical of the effectiveness of the forum itself, saying it risked sliding into irrelevancy.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma insisted the summit had been productive, citing among the forum's successes the adoption of a measure that will coordinate global emergency relief efforts to deal with food supply crises.

"I had stated that this will be a landmark CHOGM, and it is indeed proven to be one," Sharma said. "This CHOGM will be remembered as a CHOGM of reform, renewal and resilience."

Leaders did make several noteworthy decisions during the summit, including agreeing to lift a ban on monarchs marrying Roman Catholics. The forum also changed royal succession rules to allow the British monarch's first-born child ? whether a girl or a boy ? to ascend the throne, reversing centuries of tradition.

Leaders also agreed to increase efforts to eradicate polio. Leaders of Britain, Canada, Australia and Nigeria, along with billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates, pledged tens of millions of dollars in extra funding toward the World Health Organization's campaign to wipe out the disabling disease from the four countries where it remains endemic ? India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.

Michael Lohan under hospital observation

The estranged father of actress Lindsay Lohan will be held in a Tampa hospital overnight for observation, hours after his second domestic violence-related arrest this week.

Michael Lohan has been admitted to Tampa General Hospital for observation, police said, following a jump from a third-floor balcony in an attempt to escape from authorities early Thursday morning.

Lohan "apparently leaped up from his balcony and grabbed ahold of the roof (about 30 feet) until he thought he was hanging over the top of the next balcony," according to a report by Tampa Police officer J. Ladd, who responded to the call. The report said Lohan let go but missed the balcony, then came "crashing down on top of wooden high chairs that were laying on the ground."

After a short chase, officers arrested Lohan.

This was the second encounter with Florida officers this week. On Tuesday, the 51-year-old Lohan was arrested on domestic violence charges involving Kate Major, his 28-year-old girlfriend who is also a former reporter for the Star tabloid.

Police say he grabbed Major and pushed her down multiple times at her Tampa apartment during a daylong argument.

A Tampa judge released Lohan on $5,000 bail Wednesday morning and told Lohan that he should not have any contact with Major at all.

Slideshow: Lindsay Lohan (on this page)

"If you even dream about her and you violate my order, you will go to jail," Judge Walter Heinrich said, noting that Major had filed a restraining order against Lohan in Sarasota County.

When Lohan was released from jail Wednesday evening, he held an impromptu news conference in the jail parking lot. There, Lohan said he "didn't do anything" and the charges were Major's way of making money by selling her story to media outlets.

According to a police report, Wednesday night's contact began a few hours later. Lohan sent his friend and trainer David Dominique to Major's apartment to pick up his personal belongings, police said. A report said Lohan initially called Major to speak with Dominique, and Major told him that he wasn't supposed to call.

After Dominique left, Lohan called back seeking to work things out with Major. "He sounds extremely intoxicated," Major told the 911 dispatcher.

"He sounded very out of it. And I found out he was doing steroids," she said, adding that Lohan asked for a bag he hid in the bathroom.

"You're harassing me again," Major told Lohan before hanging up to call police.

Lohan called again while police were at Major's condo. Major, 28, put the call on speaker so police could listen. After hearing what Lohan said, the police department notified the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office of a violation of Judge Walter Heinrich's pre-trial release orders that he stay away from Major and an arrest order was authorized.

"We had the victim put the phone on speaker when she answered. During this conversation (Lohan) kept asking things like "how can we work things out, where you moving to, you know I didn't threaten you, I didn't throw the remote at you I threw it at the floor," Ladd wrote.

The officers eventually whispered to Major to hang up and to tell Lohan not to call again, which she did.

Lohan called again, but Major did not pick up.

Police went to the Tahitian Inn in Tampa, where Lohan was reportedly staying. According to a news release from police, Lohan spotted the officers and jumped off a third-floor balcony in an attempt to escape.

After the balcony fall and the foot pursuit, officers arrested Lohan and took him to the Hillsborough County Jail. Deputies suspected he may have broken his foot when he jumped off the balcony, so he was then taken to Tampa General Hospital.

Authorities said he will be returned to the jail once he's been cleared by doctors.

Story: Reader: How could Lohan not find morgue door?

The St. Petersburg Times reported that Lohan claimed Major set him up to be overheard by police Thursday. "She needs help, she calls me, and I'm a sucker so I call her back. I'm an idiot," Lohan said as he was being put into the back of a police cruiser.

In July, a misdemeanor domestic violence charge against Lohan stemming from a fight with Major was dismissed in Los Angeles after she failed to show up for the trial. Lohan's attorney said Major declined to cooperate to avoid a court spectacle.

Lohan has a history of arrests in New York over allegations of harassment from ex-girlfriends.

Lohan appeared on season 5 of "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew." He told police this week that he moved to Tampa to get away from the publicity surrounding his celebrity daughter Lindsay ? who has had numerous run-ins with the law herself in Los Angeles and is currently performing court-ordered community service in the L.A. County morgue for a probation violation.

She also reportedly posed for Playboy this week.

Seventy-four years after the zeppelin, another gas giant arises.Hybrid Air Vehicles' new aircraft is not technically a blimp. Nor is it a zeppelin, a craft that saw its end with the Hindenburg explosion in 1937 (and a rebirth, of sorts, in the proto-heavy-metal band's name).

Waning storm Rina sparks Cancun flight chaos (Reuters)

CANCUN/PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (Reuters) ? The remnants of Hurricane Rina bore down on Cancun and other resorts on Mexico's popular Caribbean coast on Thursday, chasing away tourists and causing massive flight delays.

Rina, which was downgraded to a tropical storm on Thursday, had already sent thousands of vacationers packing from the Yucatan peninsula, causing villages to be evacuated and a scramble by tourists to board available flights.

Sixty-eight flights to and 70 out of Cancun were canceled on Thursday, roughly 90 percent of the total number scheduled. But the city's airport remained open.

"There haven't been this many flights canceled from Cancun International airport since the H1N1 influenza in 2009," said Dario Flota, director of the Riviera Maya's tourist promotion trust, referring to the spring 2009 swine flu outbreak.

Rina, still churning winds of up to 60 miles per hour, was expected to keep weakening as it rakes the strip of resorts on the Yucatan known as the Riviera Maya by evening, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

Local businesses were left stranded by the storm.

"Sales are dead because of Rina. There's no tourism, there's no people," said Elias Aguilar, a 31-year-old salesman in a Cancun handcraft market, who said business was even worse than when Hurricane Wilma devastated the area in 2005.

South of Cancun in Playa del Carmen, heavy rain was falling by evening, the seas were choppy and the dock for ships to the tourist island of Cozumel was closed.

Most souvenir and gift shops on the pedestrian boulevard 5th Avenue had steel shutters drawn, but only a few beachfront properties had their windows secured with wooden panels.

"Normally, this plaza is full of vendors," said dock watchman Jose Antonio Palma. "They've all been gone since yesterday. They say the storm is weakening but we have to be prepared for anything. That's what we learned from Wilma. Whatever can be blown around we've cleared out of here."

Rina is an unwelcome disruption to a tourism industry already struggling with a decline in foreign visitors spooked by Mexico's violent war on drug cartels, which has claimed more than 44,000 lives in five years.

EVACUATIONS

The Yucatan coast and Cancun, where heavy rain kept beaches empty on Thursday morning, was hit badly by Hurricane Wilma, the most intense storm ever recorded in the Atlantic, and local people still have keen memories of the damage.

Rina has lost much of its punch since Wednesday, when it was a Category 2 hurricane on a five-level scale.

Still, authorities in Cancun's home state of Quintana Roo had advised people in vulnerable areas to take cover.

Rina is not expected to affect Mexico's main oil installations in the Gulf of Mexico or coffee-growing areas in Central America that were battered by heavy rains this month.

Even with the downgrades, Rina is expected to cause downpours and potentially dangerous waves. Most schools in Quintana Roo closed as a safety precaution.

More than 4,000 residents and visitors were evacuated from the islands of Isla Mujeres and the flood-prone Holbox.

The sixth hurricane in the 2011 Atlantic season, Rina was about 35 miles south of Cozumel Island, famous for its diving and coral reefs, at 7 p.m. CDT/0000 GMT on Thursday, and was moving north at 7 mph.

Rina could dump 3 to 6 inches of rain over the eastern Yucatan. A storm surge is also possible, raising tide levels as much as 2 feet (0.6 meter) above normal.

The head of Mexico's West Coast National Marine Park, Jaime Gonzalez, said the hurricane would likely erode Cancun's famous white-sand beaches, which have been rebuilt twice since Wilma stripped away nearly 60 percent of the city's sand.

For some visitors like Janet Calvert from Dallas, the storm at least offered some thrills.

Moved out of her hotel in Playa del Carmen as a safety measure against Rina's advance, she said she and her husband had even been "a bit excited" when they heard about the storm.

"We're just going to stay and experience it. ... I love storms," she said. "We can't cut this trip short because I'm not going to swim back to Dallas."

Right fight: Activists vs. House GOP (Politico)

House Republicans have a grade for conservative interest groups that apply a litmus test to their every action: F.

The outside groups have become more aggressive and punitive in recent years, and the criteria they use to rate Republicans? purity are constantly shifting, sometimes within hours or days on the same topic. That?s inspired a fiery backlash from folks who suddenly find themselves branded apostates by organizations they once saw as allies.

Heritage Action for America ? the fresh-faced activist attach? of the esteemed Heritage Foundation ? is now issuing bad grades when members of Congress fail to co-sponsor a favored bill or don?t sign onto a letter advocating for policies backed by the organization. Those are new standards for lawmakers who are accustomed to being only graded on their actual votes

?I think it?s awful and I think it?s disgusting and I think it?s an example of Republicans eating Republicans,? Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-Ohio), a member of the centrist Tuesday Group, said.

The Heritage Foundation is concerned enough about its standing on the Hill that its president, Ed Feulner, sent a survey to congressional aides Wednesday asking, ?what do you think of the Heritage Foundation??

Grover Norquist, longtime president of the Americans for Tax Reform, has had a handful of Republicans turn against him of late. Several of them feel that Norquist?s famously rigid anti-tax oath has hamstrung Congress by taking options off the table for legislators who fear he will target them if they break what?s known as ?Grover?s pledge.? Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.), who never signed the pledge, castigated Norquist in a recent floor speech, saying he was ?out of the mainstream.?

And the fiscally focused Club for Growth, derided by moderates as the ?Club for Democratic Growth,? continues to get under the skin of Republicans who believe their party is best served by nominating centrists in swing districts and states by funding the most fiscally conservative contestants in GOP primaries.

For many lawmakers, it?s a case of feeling menaced by elements of the same movement that helped fuel their takeover of the House last year.

Republicans of all stripes love to boast about the support of influential activist groups when they?re on the campaign trail. They brandish endorsements, scores and awards as they scrounge for votes. Not so long ago, the scorecards served mostly to give voters a sense of who shared their worldview and who didn?t. But the new grading culture, designed to put pressure on lawmakers to observe orthodoxy, has created a sense of paralysis for many members of Congress. The threat of political retribution, carried explicitly and implicitly in grass-roots ?action alerts? and scorecards, is injected into every imaginable act.

Hopes rise as talks for new NBA labor deal continue (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Marathon negotiations between National Basketball Association (NBA) owners and players failed to deliver a new labor agreement Thursday but both sides left negotiations vowing to continue talks to end the lockout.

"There are no guarantees that we're going to get it done," NBA commissioner David Stern told reporters at the end of a negotiating session at a Manhattan hotel. "But we're going to give it one heck of a shot tomorrow."

After meeting for 15 hours Wednesday, owners and players returned to the negotiating table Thursday and met for nearly eight hours but were unable to end the four-month old dispute although there was increasing optimism that an agreement was within reach.

More talks are planned for Friday.

"I think we're within striking distance of getting a deal," said players union boss Billy Hunter.

Negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement picked up steam after reports earlier this week suggested the league was ready to axe two more weeks from the schedule after already cancelling the opening two weeks of the regular season.

If an agreement can be reached by the weekend there are hopes a full 82-game season, which was originally scheduled to begin on November 1, might still be played.

Details from the latest round of talks were not released but it is believed the main stumbling blocks remain how the two sides will divide basketball-related income and the structure of the salary cap system.

NBA owners contend the league lost $300 million last season with 22 of 30 teams in the red and initially demanded players cut their share of revenue -- which was 57 percent under the previous agreement -- to 47 percent along with a firm salary cap and shorter contracts.

The players have lowered their proposal to 52.5 percent.

Rogers LTE equipped Samsung Galaxy S II arriving next week

Rogers has been taking preorder reservations for their LTE equipped Samsung Galaxy S II for quite some time now but the latest information coming from the Canadian carrier is that the device will be shipping as early as next week. A few lucky customers have already had their reservation orders fulfilled but other shipments now having been confirmed.

We’re also excited to confirm that we’ll continue to fulfill orders for the device as early as next week and expect to have enough devices for everyone in the reservations system.

A reminder though, Rogers LTE is currently only available in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa but no matter what network you connect it to, you'll find satisfaction in that 1.5GHz processor and 4.5-inch display.

Egypt swaps arrested US-Israeli for 25 prisoners (AP)

JERUSALEM ? A U.S.-Israeli citizen arrested in Egypt as a suspected spy was freed on Thursday after more than four months in jail, under a prisoner swap deal that has eased friction between the two countries.

Israel Hasson, an Israeli lawmaker who has been involved in the negotiations, told The Associated Press from Cairo that 27-year-old Ilan Grapel looked "fine" and was "smiling." Hasson and another Israeli official were dispatched to Egypt to escort Grapel on the one-hour flight to Tel Aviv.

Egypt traded the U.S.-born Grapel for 25 Egyptians, most of them smugglers, held in Israeli jails. The Egyptian prisoners passed through a land crossing from Israel as Grapel prepared to take off for Israel. TV footage showed some of the Egyptian men kneeling to kiss the asphalt after crossing through a blue metal gate at the border crossing.

Israel denied the allegations against Grapel, as did his family and friends, and his release helped to ease fears that relations would sour after Egypt's longtime president, Hosni Mubarak, was ousted in February.

Hours before the release, his father, Daniel Grapel, told The Associated Press that his son had been held in isolation in an unknown location and that when they last spoke two weeks ago, he seemed to be in "OK" condition and "getting fed."

"I am happy that this thing will be done and over with and that he will be able to resume his normal life away from Egypt," Daniel Grapel said in a telephone interview from his home in Queens, N.Y.

His wife, Irene, flew to Tel Aviv to meet their son, and they will remain in Israel for at least two days to meet with Israeli and American officials before returning to the U.S., he added.

The deal went ahead after the Israeli Supreme Court rejected petitions trying to stop the deal. Immediately after landing in Israel, Grapel was set to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Grapel was volunteering at a legal aid group in Cairo that resettles refugees when he was arrested and accused of spying for Israel during the grass roots revolt that overthrew Mubarak.

He made no secret of his Israeli background, entered Egypt under his real name and his Facebook page had photos of him in an Israeli military uniform. Such openness about his identity suggested he was not a spy, and even in Egypt, where hostility toward Israel runs high, the arrest was widely ridiculed.

Grapel was born in the U.S. but moved to Israel, where his grandparents live, as a young man. He did his compulsory military service in Israel during its 2006 war with Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas and was wounded in the fighting. He later returned to the U.S. to study, and after his legal internship in Cairo, had planned to return to Emory University in Atlanta for his final year of law school.

Some Israelis have criticized their government for making a deal to free a citizen arrested in a friendly nation on what they think were trumped-up allegations.

Hasson said the Israeli government was willing to free prisoners to defuse the situation. "This event could have developed into a crisis and we don't think either countries need that," he told Israel Radio.

Since Mubarak was toppled, Egypt's military rulers have often warned against what they call "foreign" attempts to destabilize the country. And like other Arab states, Egypt has a long history of blaming internal problems on Israel.

Israel and Egypt signed their peace treaty ? the first between an Arab state and the Jewish one ? in 1979. Relations have been cool since, but Mubarak carefully upheld the pact.

While the military leaders that now rule Egypt have vowed to follow suit, they have unnerved Israel with overtures to Israel's enemy, the Hamas militant group that rules Gaza, a tiny patch of Palestinian territory that borders both countries.

Those improved ties appear to have helped Egypt finally broker a long-elusive prisoner swap between Israel and Hamas last week, in which Israel traded hundreds of Palestinian prisoners for Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit, who had been held by Hamas in Gaza for more than five years.

Initially, the U.S. Embassy in Cairo had taken the lead in Grapel's case because he had entered Egypt with his U.S. passport. A former Israeli ambassador to Egypt, Eli Shaked, told Israel Radio that the U.S. was a main player in clinching the swap deal.

The U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv had no comment on the affair.

Business Advice From Drug Dealers | Investing Featured ...

There are valuable business lessons to be learned from street corner drug dealers. It takes more than a gun or some muscle to make a living with recreational pharmaceuticals -- it is a career that touches upon any of the disciplines taught in an MBA program.

One might consider the shady crack seller or pill pusher as akin to an independent distributor working for a global conglomerate reaping billions of dollars a year. All the fundamentals of running a successful business are part of everyday life for a dealer.

There is securing raw goods and turning them into a consumer-friendly product, commodity speculation, and building a base of buyers and ensuring consumer retention. Customer satisfaction, brand management, and advertising are all necessary to stay ahead of the competition and deter upstarts looking to snatch away market share.

While a Chipotle (CMG) or Wal-Mart (WMT) might have a team of experts to parse maps and demographics before picking a location, drug dealers have a more street-level approach to real estate. They need to consider the character of a neighborhood and choose a base of operations convenient to customers, yet not so close to police stations, churches, or schools that they may draw unwanted attention.

There is also research and development at play. After all, someone had to perfect the art of reducing cocaine into the cheap, easy-to-move and more addictive form of crack. And basement labs everywhere are always looking to perfect their recipe for crystal meth.

In their book Rework (Crown Business, 2010), authors Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson -- co-founders of 37Signals, a Web application company -- cite the value of the age-old drug dealer strategy of offering free product to new customers as a ploy to get them addicted and coming back for more. That first joint on the house is really just a loss leader intended to drive bigger, more reliable sales.

Giving away a little to get a lot is all in a day's work for ice cream parlors, coffee shops, and health clubs.

John Moore runs Brand Autopsy Marketing Practice, a marketing consultancy that has worked with USA Today, Best Buy (BBY), and Little Caesar's, among other companies. He was also an in-house marketing expert for Whole Foods (WFM).

Moore has delved into the business advice that can be gleaned from drug dealers numerous times on Brand Autopsy's blog. Inspiration for his observations comes from Bruce Jacobs' book, Dealing Crack: The Social World of Streetcorner Selling (Northeastern University Press, 1999) and detail-seeking viewings of the movie American Gangster, a look at the shrewd and steady rise of a drug kingpin played by Denzel Washington.

He also cites his own experience as a "drug dealer" of sorts: As a retail marketer with Starbucks (SBUX), it was his job to help sell the public on the addictive substance known as caffeine.

"Business is business," he says. "It doesn't matter if it is legal or illegal, the same principles apply. It all comes down to profit. What can you do to be able to sell your goods and services at a profit?"

The "free sample" approach used by drug dealers is something he saw in action in corporate America.

"Coffee has caffeine and its addictive quality," Moore says. "And once you become accustomed to a flavorful taste profile, you can't go back to the cheaper stuff. If Starbucks was selling pizza they wouldn't have been that successful. They found success in selling a legal drug. You hear of people who have caffeine withdrawal and the only way to solve that is to buy coffee, to drink coffee. The greatest way to increase sales back at Starbucks was the sampling."

"Isn't that the same principle a drug dealer uses? They give you a little taste, they show you what you could have, and you turn from a rational consumer to an irrational consumer who will gladly pay," he say.

Moore points out a lesson presented in American Gangster: The flashiest, loudest drug dealers are not necessarily successful enough to warrant their image.

"A business that just has to spend millions of dollars to promote itself is probably having to cover up for a weak product," he says. "A business that doesn't feel like it has to do the multimillion-dollar advertising campaign can still be a highly successful brand or business with a quiet humbleness. The people who are probably making the most money are the most quiet about it. Case in point: Warren Buffett. He's not the loudest, most flamboyant investor, but he goes down as probably one of the most successful."

There are two types of drug dealers. One gets by with scattered, urgent sales of diluted product -- cocaine cut with baby laxative, marijuana sprinkled with dollar-store oregano. The other cultivates loyal customers who seek out the purity and quality of their wares.

Similarly, Moore thinks that companies often focus more on cheap and generic, as opposed to realizing that people will pay for quality. "You see, despite the down economy, that some of the most successful retailers are the ones who are selling high end," he says.

"Look at beer," Moore says, continuing the analogy. "You've got Budweiser (BUD), Miller Light, and Coors (TAP) and they spend a gargantuan amount of dollarson marketing and advertising, but really the higher-quality beers are the craft beers that typically don't spend their money on the advertising and instead they use those dollars to make a better product. It can be polarizing, because you have to appreciate that taste. But if you do appreciate it, you are paying for it. It's the same thing with drugs. If you appreciate what that drug is going to give you, you are going to pay more for it. If you don't appreciate the difference, then you might as well buy a mass-produced drug of lower quality."

No matter how tough or scary a drug dealer may be, the job requires a focus on customer service. No matter when or where customers want to buy their dope, a smart dealer will accommodate them.

"In a way it is being on call," Moore says. "If you are in that business you need to cater to your customer base. When you are dealing with an irrational customer base, it means you have to do irrational things. That basically means being on call 24 hours a day."

Smart businesses follow a similar philosophy. Starbucks has what it calls the "10 Minute Rule," a policy of opening locations 10 minutes before their posted house of operation and keeping them open 10 minutes after the stated closing time. Anyone jonesing for an Egg McMuffin at 10:31 a.m., may similarly appreciate a decision by Jack in the Box (JACK) to sell all-day breakfast as it competes with McDonald's (MCD).

Shell, Statoil profits soar on higher oil (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSa.L) and Norway's Statoil reported big jumps in profits on Thursday, driven mainly by higher oil and gas prices with help from increased production.

Shell, Europe's largest oil company by market capitalization, said its underlying current cost of supply (CCS) net income in the third quarter, excluding one-offs, soared 42 percent to $7.0 billion.

Statoil said its adjusted net income, which is calculated on the same basis, rose 50 percent in dollar terms to $2.07 billion in the third quarter.

Both companies' earnings were broadly in line with analysts' forecasts.

Shell's London-listed "A" shares traded up 1.7 percent at 2,292 pence at 0809 GMT, compared with a 1.4 percent rise in the STOXX Europe 600 Oil and Gas index (.SXEP). Statoil shares rose 2.2 percent to 144.8 NOK.

Later on Thursday, Exxon Mobil, the world's largest publicly-traded oil company, is expected to report a 40 percent jump in third-quarter net income to $10.26 billion, according to I/B/E/S estimates.

Chief Executive Peter Voser said Shell's enormous investments in big new projects were beginning to pay off, pointing to growth in underlying production, although field sales pushed headline production down 2 percent to 3.01 million barrels of oil equivalent (boepd).

Analysts agreed that Shell was entering a "sweet spot" of strong cash flow thanks to its Athabasca oil sands project in Canada, and its Pearl gas-to-liquids and Qatargas liquefied natural gas plants in Qatar.

"The 'big 3' projects are delivering less than 50 percent plateau production and Qatar less than 50 percent of plateau cashflows, hence significant momentum remains," Jon Rigby, oil analyst at UBS, said.

Statoil said its output - buoyed by a revitalization of exploration and production in the Norwegian North Sea - rose 14 percent in the quarter compared with the same period last year, to 1.57 million boepd.

However, Statoil still expects its output to be down slightly this year, before rising next year.

"Statoil has just released a mixed set of 3Q11 financial figures," Teodor Sveen Nilsen, analyst at First Securities in Oslo, said.

The Japan earthquake earlier this year and subsequent shut down of nuclear plants has boosted demand for natural gas, especially liquefied natural gas, in which Shell is a market leader.

The Hague-based company said LNG sales rose 12 percent, echoing buoyant LNG results reported by smaller rival BG Group on Tuesday.

Shell said its CCS net earnings were $7.2 billion, a 100 percent rise on the same period last year when non-cash accounting charges weighed on the result.

CCS earnings strip out unrealized gains or losses related to changes in the value of inventories, and as such are comparable with net income under U.S. accounting rules.

When Will Your Android Device Get Ice Cream Sandwich? (ContributorNetwork)

It's not just a frozen dessert; it's also the latest version of Google's open-source Android operating system, and it's packed with new features and sporting a stylish new look. But right now, the only phone sporting it is the Galaxy Nexus ... and it won't even be up for sale until next month.

Existing devices can be upgraded, but unlike iOS updates for iPhones it's a bit of a hassle. It's not as simple as just downloading the latest version of Android; both the manufacturer and the carrier have to do a lot of work to get their customizations and (nonuninstallable) apps ready. Because of that, it can be months before an upgrade comes to an existing handset, if it ever comes at all.

Here's what the Android smartphone and tablet companies have said about when their gadgets will be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich:

Motorola

Motorola has so far confirmed Ice Cream Sandwich will be coming to the (upcoming) Droid RAZR and the Droid Bionic. The Droid RAZR will get it sometime early next year, while the Droid Bionic's upgrade timing will be announced once Google releases the final version of Ice Cream Sandwich. A Motorola representative has also said that this year's Xoom tablet will get Ice Cream Sandwich, but did not provide any more details than that.

Sony Ericsson

In a post on the Facebook page for Sony's branch in the Netherlands, a Sony representative basically said the company is still busy upgrading Xperia smartphones to Gingerbread, the previous version. It said "we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us," though, and you can interpret that however you like.

HTC

HTC's HTC Sense overlay is one of the more complex manufacturer customizations for Android, which may explain why HTC hasn't committed to setting a date or naming any handsets or tablets to get Ice Cream Sandwich yet. It's stated that "Our goal is to upgrade as many HTC devices as possible," but it's also said that "we are committed to maintaining every phone's performance and usability first."

Do it yourself

The programming code to Ice Cream Sandwich is not open-source just yet. Google has said that it will open-source Ice Cream Sandwich once the Galaxy Nexus is available, however, and "custom ROMs" like CyanogenMod will be able to create Ice Cream Sandwich versions at that time. Please note that rooting your phone and installing a custom ROM are not for the faint of heart, and may void your warranty as well.

National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (ContributorNetwork)

The Environmental Protection Agency is celebrating National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. During this time, the EPA will be increasing ongoing efforts to make Americans aware of the dangers posed by lead, especially in the home where it can affect small children. With the awareness week underway, here are the need-to-know facts about lead poisoning, regulations, and how to reduce the health risks.

* Lead is a toxic heavy metal that had been used in paints and other household materials, according to the EPA.

* In 1978, lead-based paint was banned from use in homes and household pipes were also required to be lead-free.

*Homes dating before 1978 can still have lead-contaminated paints, pipes and other materials.

* The Mayo Clinic notes lead poisoning occurs when lead builds up in the body over months or even years.

* Young children, especially younger than 6 years old, are vulnerable to lead poisoning since it can negatively affect physical and mental growth and even be deadly at higher levels.

* Lead poisoning can be identified through a blood test, which will show the lead levels. An unsafe level is 10 micrograms per deciliter or higher.

* The Department of Housing and Urban Development emphasizes small children can become lead poisoned by putting their hands or other lead-contaminated items in their mouths, eating flaking lead-based paint chips off walls, or playing in lead contaminated soil.

* To reduce the risk of lead poisoning, those with homes older than 1978 should be diligent about cleaning often, namely wiping down surfaces, mopping floors, cleaning up loose paint chips, vacuuming with a special filter, and minimizing dust, as well as using cold tap water for drinking and cooking.

* For young children living or visiting pre-1978 homes, HUD suggests having their blood tested and washing their hands to reduce possible contact with surfaces containing lead residue.

* Homeowners can also have their homes and soil tested for possible lead contamination by a professional.

* The EPA has several laws that are in place to help protect people from lead poisoning in homes.

* The Disclosure Rule requires that people selling or leasing homes disclose whether or not homes dating back to 1978 or earlier contain lead, including lead-based paint.

* The EPA's Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Paint Rule, effective since April 2010, requires anyone paid to work on homes, daycares, schools and clinics to be Certified Lead Safe by the EPA, a certification that requires special training.

Rick Perry flat tax plan: Borrowing from Herman Cain?

Rick Perry's flat tax plan is simple, and borrows talking points from Herman Cain's 999 plan, notes DCDecoder.

Rick Perry unveiled a ?flat tax? plan Tuesday that would allow taxpayers to choose between their current income tax rate and a flat tax of 20 percent. He also proposed lowering the corporate tax rate to 20 percent, while eliminating corporate loopholes. He would keep popular mortgage and charitable deductions for families making less than $500,000 a year, and would eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits.

What strikes us, however, is how much Perry seems to be taking his talking points on taxes from Herman Cain. Perry?s plan is more nuanced than Cain?s 999 plan, but like Cain, Perry is proposing to dramatically overhaul the current tax code and replace it with something simple - something that voters seem especially hungry to do, as evidenced by Cain?s success.

Here?s what Perry said when introducing his plan in South Carolina (a key, early primary state):

"Central to my plan is giving every American the option of throwing out the three million words of the current tax code, and the costs of complying with that code, in order to pay a 20 percent flat tax on their income.

The size of the current code, which is more than 72,000 pages, is represented by this pallet and its many reams of paper.

The best representation of my plan is this post card, which taxpayers will be able to fill out to file their taxes."

Sound familiar? Here?s Herman Cain at the last GOP debate in Las Vegas:

The reason that my plan ? the reason that our plan is being attacked so much is because lobbyists, accountants, politicians, they don?t want to throw out the current tax code and put in something that?s simple and fair. They want to continue to be able to manipulate the American people with a 10-million-word mess. Let?s throw out the 10-million-word mess and put in our plan, which will liberate the American workers and liberate American businesses.

In fact, Herman Cain has been talking about ?throwing out? the tax code for many months now, and it?s consistently been one of his biggest applause lines. You can watch a video here of Cain on the stump - he gets a huge audience reaction when he talks about chucking the current tax code:

"We don?t need some mild fuel in this engine, we need some bold fuel.

And I call it my 999 plan. Why?

It starts with - watch this, y?all - throw out the current tax code! [THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE, CHEERING] Get rid of it!

Throw it out, because how many years, most of you all your life, have been complaining about the tax code. We know it?s messed up. But nobody has the guts to say we need to throw it out.

Now, once you throw it out, then we pass the 999 legislation?.

It?s simpler, it?s fairer. And it saves us $430 billion a year in filing and compliance costs."

Amazon building 'millions more' Kindle Fires than planned, thanks to pre-orders

Amazon Kindles

Amazon released its third-quarter earnings today. And while the Kindle Fire isn't yet available, CEO Jeff Bezos is pimping pre-orders like they're they lifeblood of the company. And if the rhetoric is even half true, it might well be. Bezos said they're already increasing manufacturing capacity "and building millions more than we'd already planned."

Not bad for a device that nobody in the public (as well as 99 percent of journalists) has even touched yet.

Money-wise, Amazon says net sales were up 44 percent year over year, to $10.88 billion in the three months ending Sept. 30, though net income was down 73 percent to $63 million.

Conference call's coming up. Stay tuned.
