ManTech International Corp. (NASDAQ: MANT) will provide technical and operations support services for the Defense Commissary Agency?s worldwide information applications, the company announced Wednesday.

The company won a potential five-year, $25 million task order through the General Services Administration?s IT Schedule 70 contract vehicle.

?DeCA operates about 250 DoD commissaries with approximately 15,000 employees, all supported by a variety of information systems accessed by 5,500 computers worldwide,? said Louis Addeo, president and chief operating officer of the company?s technical services group.

Addeo also said the company will use its information technology and software engineering experience worldwide to give DeCA a resource for its work with military and families.

Work covered under this task order includes program management, software maintenance, integration, application migration and updates.

The company will also provide deployment services for existing DeCA information applications including ordering, receiving and financial systems.

ManTech recently won a potential $151.9 million task order from the Army to provide information technology support for C4ISR systems (command, control, communications, computers, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance).

The 5 Types of Lifestyle Designers

Post image for The 5 Types of Lifestyle Designers

Have you read Simon Black?s post about the 7 Types of Expats? I thought of it yesterday as my friend was buzzing me through the mountains near Chaing Mai, Thailand (beautfiul!). We got to talking about the lifestyle design ?scene.?

Make no mistake? it?s a scene for sure. Here in Chaing Mai there?s easily 100?s of nomadic internet types. One well-placed tweet will land you at a cafe where the conversations will hover losely around topics like Singapore vs. Hong Kong, Galaxy S3?s vs. iPhone 5?s, Pandas, Penguins, Paypal policies, and link building strategies.

One thing unites us all? love it or hate it? nearly all of us have read the 4 Hour Work Week and have a lot of varying opinions about it. In the book, Ferriss doesn?t offer a concise definition, so I?ll take stab(ish) at one:

Lifestyle design ? n ? the state of affairs created when basic living wages can be earned with an increasingly tenuious connection to time-input or physical location. This ?modularity? of personal income calls into question those lifestyle elements which traditionally correlated more closely with earning? namely? time, mobility, purpose, passion, and autonomy, among others.

The criticism that ?lifestyle design has always been around? is fair enough then, but it?s only really been available to rich people? people with property, companies, or other assets that generate cash without their?assistance.?What used to take a company, employees, start-up capital, can now get done with a website and a Paypal account. It?s easier than ever to try and strike it rich, and I guess in a way that?s what lifestyle designers are after. But unlike previous generations of business owners, they aren?t just counting cash.

Here?s some of the types of lifesytle designers I?ve met in my travels. What type are you?

The Gamer.?Gamers are very often poker players, affiliate marketers, SEOers, or paid traffic guys. Gamers are often very bright, and are attracted to the opportunity to ?hack? everything. They often find it difficult to building a business that scales. They tend move on to new money-making challenges fast.

What do Gamers think the 4 Hour Work Week all about? Using data driven strategies to put up effective offers on the web. Launch, test, optmize, and repeat.

The Passionate Practitioner. Much like many of my blogging co-horts, the promise of the 4 Hour Work Week was the opportunity to trade income and mobility in order to win back time. PP?s are excited about the opportunity to make money from work that they?d want to be doing anyway. Copywriters, bloggers, product designers, public speakers, fans of parkour,?juicing, or ?practically?anything under the sun can now dream of monetizing their passions without signing any leases.

What do?Practitioners?think 4 Hour Work Week all about? Earning back your time so you can do what you are truly passionate about.

The Entrepreneur. Probably the most natural audience for the book, the 4HWW?movement caught legs and extended much further beyond the over-worked business owner in the bay area. That said, I can?t tell you how many multi-million dollar business owners I?ve seen putting up e-book landing pages (some to great success!) after having been exposed to lifestyle design concepts.

Entrepreneurs are business people first, so they enjoy freeing time to do more business oriented side projects, or to spend time with family and friends. Given their history growing organizations and cash-flows, entrepreneurs don?t struggle as much with ?filling the void.? In my experience, it?s entrepreneurs who have taken the impact of 4HWW most in stride. ?Yeah, I put up a blog and backpacked through Europe? now what??

What do Entrepreneurs think the 4 Hour Work Week all about? Asking yourself what your business can do for you and not the other way around. Your business should empower you to find the things you want to do, not dictate a list of things you should do.

The Natural. Naturals, either by extraordinary personal experience, luck, special DNA, or necessity, are compelled to live outside of inhereted cultural scripts for making a living, educating themselves, and identifying projects to take on. The natural was doing it since day 1.

What do Naturals think the 4 Hour Work Week all about? ?Me!?

The Tourist. The tourist is drawn into the community by the most immediate and compelling promise of lifesytle design? the prospect of unlimited world travel. The tourist often cashes in assets or takes a step back in their career in order to test out life on the road. The tourist isn?t yet sure about owning their own means of production, or what that might mean exactly. But screw it, let?s travel!

What do Tourists think the 4 Hour Work Week all about? Working your whole life away is a waste, we should go after our true passions? like travel? while we are young and still able to enjoy it. We?ll figure out the income thing later. And anyway, those jobs aren?t going anywhere. Are they?

Got any more?

Cheers,

Dan

PS, sometimes readers are dissapointed because they miss out on events, jobs, and new stuff we are doing (we?re finishing a book and a graduate level entrepreneurship course by the end of the year!). The only way to keep 100% up to date is to subscribe to our mailing list:

Member?s of our inner circle get early action announcements on everything we do, and that was the case with our Bangkok meet-up. We ended up selling out all spots inside our forum so the offer never went public.

PPS, thanks for reading my blog yo!!!

PPPS, You can follow some other stuff I?m doing on?Facebook, Twitter, RSS, and Tropical Talk Radio.

Last-Minute Halloween Hints - Childhood Obesity News

Halloween candy

As we head into the season that encompasses the traditional American Big Four ? Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year ? and a number of other ethnic, religious, and cultural holiday festivals, let us reflect on the words of psychotherapist Stefanie Barthmare, as quoted in ScienceDaily:

If you use food as a crutch, this time of year could be troublesome.

Barthmare says a holiday-season gain of 7 to 10 pounds is not unusual. Like Dr. Pretlow and many others, she advocates getting to the root of personal problems and learning to cope with stress in more productive ways than comfort eating. Barthmare is further quoted as saying:

If it was just a matter of knowing the calorie difference between a piece of cake and broccoli, we would all be all be our ideal weight. Maintaining a healthy weight requires a disciplined approach mentally and physically? Unfortunately, it?s complicated and there is not a one-size fits all solution.

Barthmare, in other words, affirms and validates the very same lesson Dr. Pretlow has learned from the voices of children and youth, via his Weigh2Rock website: information is not enough. And while there is no one-size-fits-all solution, a useful approach to a solution is to look at the childhood obesity epidemic through the ?psychological food dependence-addiction lens.?

Dr. Barnard of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine takes the occasion of Halloween as an opportunity to voice his year-long concerns, such as children as young as five whose physical exams show signs of preventable disease and early demise. He says:

What really scares me are the meat and dairy products lurking in children?s diets every day and everywhere ? from fast food to school lunches. Unfortunately, some parents don?t share this fear? Meat and dairy products are loaded with fat and cholesterol that lead to childhood obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.

It?s probably too late to do anything about this Halloween. Most likely, the candy is purchased and ready to distribute. Maybe the kids have already gone to some parties. If a family has not set boundaries and introduced limiting rules by this time, it?s probably too late to make any changes this year.

Just in case you still have hope, plug the word ?Halloween? into the Childhood Obesity News search box, and pick up a few quick ideas. Here?s another suggestion: Even if this year?s celebration isn?t everything you would like it to be, observe carefully and make mental notes in a file called ?What to do differently next year.?

Of course, it goes without saying, that you should limit the actual consumption of candy on October 31. An agreement should be made beforehand, that only a certain amount is allowed, once the kids are back home. But what about while they?re out in the neighborhood, going from house to house? A mask that obscures vision is bad, but here?s an in idea to consider for future Halloweens: a mask that covers the mouth.

Post trick-or-treating, let the child sort, fondle, categorize, gloat over, and otherwise enjoy the swag. It?s the only time of year when it?s okay to play with the food! Give the child a chance to realize that a lot of the contributions are not even close to being favorites.

Meanwhile you, the parent, estimate the caloric value of the haul, then pack it up and stow it away out of sight. Next day, when the supermarket puts all the candy on sale, offer a trade: Will the child give up the Halloween collection, never to see it again, in return for a much smaller amount of a favorite brand? Some kids will go for this bargain. It?s worth a try.

Your responses and feedback are welcome!

5 Google Analytics Reports and Tips You Should Embrace Now ...

Posted on 29. Oct, 2012 by John Jantsch in Blog, Google Analytics, Small Business Internet Marketing, Small Business Marketing, Social Media

Google Analytics just keeps getting better and better as far as I?m concerned and marketers that use this free tool need to get better and better at understanding what it can tell you.

On a side note, anytime Google improves a free tool they are probably getting ready to offer a paid version. Quite frankly the tool is worth paying for if you take advantage of the many ways to slice and dice your data.

Google Analytics Multi Channel Funnels

Google Analytics Multi Channel Funnels

You have to move beyond tracking site and page visits and get to the data that can actually help you make better marketing decisions.

On top of learning how to improve your conversions, when you understand the meaning behind your marketing data, you can gain a far greater understanding of everything about your business.

Google Analytics has steadily added more features that can help you create and track conversion goals and paths to conversion on your site. They?ve added real-time, social and mobile data reports so you can analyze traffic and conversion from just about every dimension. (Keep up with Analytics blog)

Below are five somewhat new functions that I think are worth taking the time to understand.

1) Multi-Channel Funnels

Multi-Channel Funnel Reports are a great way to get a handle on how your entire inbound marketing effort is doing. Once set up these reports tell you what channels customers interacted with during the 30 days before conversion or purchase.

This can effectively allow you to see a complete picture of the steps your customers take before purchasing or converting. This way you can identify time lags and friction as well as identify your most effective channels.

This is also a great way to better understand the value of social media, for example, as you can view how Twitter may have assisted in the path to conversion, even if it started with a Google Ad.

Here?s a nice tutorial on Multi Channel Funnel set-up.

2) Mobile Stats

I?ve been pushing for mobile themes and flexible design for some time now and my view is the tremendous growth in smaller tablets is going to push this beyond mandatory.

My site currently receives about 12% of its visits via mobile devices, including iPads. This is up 30% over comparison to just April of this year.

Google Analytics has a mobile tab and you must start paying attention to current state and growth state of mobile on your site as you determine what mobile-based enhancements you make to your site and marketing in general.

One tip for watching growth: You can compare one date range to another by dropping down the date range function in the upper right corner and clicking the compare box.

3) Search Engine Optimization

Another potentially valuable report is the Search Engine Optimization Report found in your Traffic Sources tab. You?ll need to integrate your Google Webmaster Tools account with Google Analytics to access this. If you have a Webmaster account Google will ask you to allow access, if you don?t you?ll need to set one up, which you certainly should for a variety of other reasons.

This report gives you some insight into how well your site is ranking for specific keyword phrases. It shows you the search volume for the term, how much traffic you are receiving, the impressions and the average position you hold for the term.

My experience is this is a bit wonky as it averages many things, but it?s not a bad way to find terms that you might want to work a little harder at optimizing your site for. This also a great place to do some comparison date ranges to see the impact of your SEO tweaks.

4) Social Conversion Goals

Not too long ago Google integrated social tracking into the Analytics suite to provide a fuller range of information regarding social network activity.

In addition to tracking how much traffic you are receiving from the various networks, you can build conversion goals for each network and see, for example, how many Twitter visitors sign up for your newsletter.

Out of the box Google tracks any +1 activity to and from your site, but if you want to add other plugins, such as Likes and InShares, you?ll need to do a little work to get these tracked properly. Here?s the tutorial on setting up Google Analytics with Social Plugins.

5) Real-Time Visits

The last report to cover today is Real-Time. This is accessed through the Home tab and Real-Time tab. This report, as the name suggests, shows you what is going on in real-time. Data from most reports in Google Analytics lags a day or more behind.

You can see how many visitors are currently on your site, top social sources, top active pages and top referral sources.

This data can be a bit distracting if you become obsessed with watching it, but the real reason I like it is that if I check it a couple times a day and I identify when a high traffic or profile site has linked to one of my blog posts and perhaps jump on over and add some comments while the conversation is fresh.

It?s also a nice way to monitor the impact of a campaign or even email newsletter click through in real time.

There?s much to learn in this category and, while it can sometimes feel like Calculus, it?s where the really smart marketers go to get better at their craft. I?m a big fan of the books by Avinash Kaushik and you may also want to grab this eBook ? Google Analytics Integrations.

In debate, Romney reiterates Russia is 'geopolitical foe' of US

The GOP presidential candidate's comments about Russia, which he has repeated several times this year, are likely to irk the Kremlin, but are not apt to change US-Russian relations.

By Arthur Bright,?Staff writer / October 23, 2012

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney delivers a foreign policy speech at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va., in early October.

In last night's US presidential debate on foreign policy, Mitt Romney once again stated his belief that Russia was a "geopolitical foe" of the US, echoing similar comments he made in March of this year.?

When he has accused Russia of being a "geopolitical foe" in the past, Moscow reacted with confusion and irritation, but little expectation of a change in US-Russian relations.

Mr. Romney first called Russia "our No. 1 geopolitical foe" during the Republican primaries in March, soon after an open mic caught President Barack Obama asking Russia's then-President Dmitry Medvedev to dial back their objections to US missile defense plans until after the November elections, when "I'll have more flexibility."

Although ostensibly a political attack against Mr. Obama, Romney's words caused puzzled concern in Moscow, the Monitor's Fred Weir reported.

A poll carried out by the independent, Moscow-based Levada Center earlier this month found that 42 percent of Russians think relations with the US are either "friendly," "good neighborly," or "normal and peaceful," while 47 percent think they are "cool" or "tense," and just 4 percent said they are "hostile."

"I can't see Romney's remarks as anything but an emotional outburst," says Gennady Gudkov, deputy chair of the State Duma's security committee. "That just doesn't correspond to the actual state of relations between our countries at all. Not only is Russia not a country that's hostile to the US, we are actually allies in many geopolitical issues. Russians may sometimes verbally abuse America, but we tend to keep our money over there, both privately and in the form of our national currency reserves, which are held largely in US dollars?. ?In fact, Russia is far more interested in our relations with the US than the Americans are in their ties with Russia." ...

"Regarding ideological clich?s, every time this or that side uses phrases like 'enemy No. 1,' this always alarms me, this smells of Hollywood and certain times [of the past]," Medvedev said. "I would recommend all US presidential candidates ... do two things. First, when phrasing their position, one needs to use one's head, one's good reason, which would not do harm to a presidential candidate."

When Romney repeated his criticism of Russia during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in August ? he said that "Under my administration, our friends will see more loyalty, and [Vladimir Putin, who was sworn in as Russia's president in May,] will see a little less flexibility and more backbone" ? it again spurred a negative response from Moscow, Weir reported.

Windows Phone 8: New Features Coming

Even as Hurricane Sandy pounded the Eastern Seaboard, drowning out a lot of other news, Microsoft took the stage Monday afternoon in San Francisco to show off its Windows Phone 8 operating system, which it will release on new phones this month and next.

While Microsoft had previously detailed some of the new features in the software and Nokia, HTC and Samsung have announced new phones, Joe Belfiore, the manager of the Windows Phone Program, announced some unseen features -- and took shots at the competition -- during the hour-long presentation.

"Apple did announce a fifth row of icons, but we wanted to come at it from a different point of view. We decided not to use the tired old metaphor," Belfiore said. "We put people at the center of the experience. Not icons for apps, not focus on speeds and feeds like Android and the iPhone do, respectively."

Kids Corner, Data Sense, Lock Screen
Microsoft Windows Phone operating system has always been built on the idea of live tiles. The tiles or apps on the home screen refresh with new information on their own; you don't have to tap the app to see if the temperature outside has changed. You can also customize it with tiles of your favorite people and contacts.

Now, with Windows Phone 8, you can see some of that information on your Lock Screen. "It will automatically surface photos and notifications and content from your favorite apps," Belfiore said.

Microsoft has worked with Facebook to create a new app for Windows Phone 8 to surface Facebook updates on the lock screen. There will also be a new Twitter app that will function similarly.

Another new feature is focused on saving you money and data. It's called Data Sense, and Microsoft says it will compress data sent over the wireless network, so that you pay for fewer megabytes. The feature provides a snapshot of your data usage and also helps you find nearby Wi-Fi hotspots so you can switch off of the mobile network. Because of the feature, Belfiore said that you can get 40 percent more web browsing than other phones.

Then there's the Kids Corner, which lets you lock down parts of the phone when you hand the device over to a young one dying to play "Angry Birds" or "Fruit Ninja." You can determine what apps you'd like your child to have access to and configure it so they can't get into your email or Twitter account. Actress and model Jessica Alba, who also has a one-year-old daughter, spoke at the event about being a recent Windows Phone convert.

"I really like the Kids Corner. I can go right to the curated apps and videos that I want my daughter to have. That's really key. Prior to this phone, if my daughter was going to go on my phone, there was a strong chance she was going to be able to go on my Facebook or Twitter and post whatever she wanted," Alba told ABC News in a phone interview. Alba gave up her iPhone for Windows Phone two months ago.

Application Momentum
But all the new features won't solve the major issue that's been facing Microsoft's phone platform: application selection. Many application developers first build for iPhone and the iPad, then Android and then Windows Phone.

Belfiore spent a good amount of time talking about the new and major apps coming to the platform, including UrbanSpoon, Temple Run, and Pandora. There are also new Facebook, Skype, and Twitter apps.

Even industry analysts were impressed by the showing. "Microsoft made a good case about how Windows Phone is different, a case they've made for two years but today is the first time they've articulated why different might be better," Michael Gartenberg, Gartner Research Director, told ABC News. "The lack of overall applications will still remain an issue but with many of the popular apps now or soon available Windows Phone 8 will appeal to many consumers if Microsoft can effectively tell them the story."

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who made an appearance at the end of the presentation, said that the momentum for the platform is at its strongest point ever.

"Our hardware partners are all in. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile are all in, plus hundreds of mobile operators around the world are all in. Developers are all in, filling the Windows Phone Store with applications."

The Phones
The first Windows 8 phones will go on sale as early as this coming weekend. Verizon will carry the HTC 8X, Lumia 922 and Samsung ATIV Odyssey phone. AT&T will carry the Lumia 920. T-Mobile will get the HTC 8X ($149.99) and Lumia 820 ($99.99) on Nov. 14. All the phones will be available at Microsoft's stores as well; there are 65 stores nationwide now.

Gas prices jump as refineries shut ahead of storm

Mike Groll / AP

Motorists fill their vehicles and and gas cans in preparation for Hurricane Sandy Monday in Middleburgh, N.Y. Gas prices are likely to rise in the region until area refineries can safely reopen.

By Reuters

The supply of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel into the East Coast ground virtually to a halt Monday as Hurricane Sandy forced the closure of two-thirds of the region's refineries, its biggest pipeline, and most major ports.

Gasoline prices jumped as much as 11 cents a gallon on commodities markets as traders feared that power outages and flooding could leave refiners struggling to restore operations after the broadest storm ever to hit the United States. Prices later pared gains to close up about 6 cents a gallon at $2.757.

As Sandy neared the coast refinery, pipeline, port and terminal operators shuttered or reduced operations, increasing the risk that bottlenecks would keep fuel supplies from reaching customers.

"Given the recent tightness of supplies in New York Harbor, this weather event is only likely to perpetuate strength in gasoline prices," BNP Paribas oil analysts Harry Tchilinguirian and Gareth Lewis-Davies said in a research note.

Colonial Pipeline, the nation's largest oil products pipeline that connects the East Coast to Gulf Coast refiners, was set to close its main line to Philadelphia and New York, halting delivery of up to 15 percent of the region's fuel demand.

Nearly 70 percent of the region's refining capacity was on track to be idled. Phillips 66
confirmed it had completely shut its giant Bayway, N.J., refinery, the area's second-largest plant, known as the "gasoline machine" for its key role supplying motor fuel to the New York City area.

Philadelphia Energy Solutions began the precautionary closure of key units at its Philadelphia refinery, the region's biggest.

"Many of the process units have been shut down, others are in 'standby,' and the remainder have been brought to their minimum safe operating levels," said spokeswoman Cherice Corley.

The storm comes as low inventories of refined products have stirred concerns of potential price spikes during the winter heating season.

The precautionary refinery closures are more widespread than during Hurricane Irene in August 2011, when only the Bayway plant shut completely.

While refiners escaped any serious damage during that hurricane, many fear Sandy's massive storm surge -- forecast to be as high as 11 feet -- could breach plant defenses and cause damaging flooding, which can sometimes take weeks to repair. Abrupt power outages also can damage refinery equipment.?

Pushing genome data analysis one step forward

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Due to the exponential increase in sequencing capacity, efficient tools for data analysis are becoming essential to process the vast amount of biological data. The GEM project, led by Paolo Ribeca from the Centro Nacional de An?lisis Gen?mico (CNAG) and including scientists from this center and the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG), allowed the development of a tool for the interpretation of genomic data that is several times faster and much more accurate than other tools currently being used.

The study has been published in the journal Nature Methods.

If we use the well-known comparison of the genome with a book, then we can say without fear of being wrong that it is a very complicated book. It is thousands of times bigger than a regular book, with more than 3 billion letters in total, each one being an A, C, G or T, as per the four possible bases of the DNA code. One can see the genome as a sequence of millions of words without breaks between them nor capitalization nor punctuation. Most words occur only once in the genome, but some can be found thousands of times with small variations. And reading this book gets even more complicated when you can only see short sentences with few words, each one randomly extracted from the book.

Last generation sequencing techniques used at the CNAG and the CRG, involve breaking the genome into small pieces (alike to short sentences from the book), sequencing such pieces and trying to find them back in the genome. The next step, mandatory in most biological experiments, would be assigning the sentences to their correct original location. However, this can be an extremely difficult task: sentences might be misspelled (sequencing is not a perfect process, and introduces errors) or slightly different (the genome of the individual being sequenced usually contains small variations if compared to the reference one). In addition, each sequencing experiment produces billions of short sentences.

This is the starting point that led some researchers at the CRG and the CNAG to design a computer program that helps to find sequences in the reference genome, quickly and accurately: such tools, called 'mappers', are essential to interpret data in genomic studies, as they represent the first analysis step for many biological experiments. After 5 years of development the result is the GEM (Genomic Multitool) mapper.

The GEM mapper is several times faster than other reference programs in the field and delivers breathtaking performance, matching into the huge human genome of reference about 40 million sequences per hour on a single CPU core. As it uses algorithms that guarantee that it doesn?t miss matches, GEM is also much more accurate than other comparable programs. In addition, GEM allows the parameters of the search to be tuned to the specific requirements of the biological experiment being performed, offering a versatility that cannot be achieved with most existing tools.

The good performance profile of GEM will help to face a practical problem: the dramatic increase in the amount of sequencing data. As an example, the CNAG started operations in 2010 with a park of 12 second generation sequencers that generated roughly 50 Gbases per day. Thanks to the recent spectacular advances in sequencing technology, today, only 2 and a half years after, the CNAG generates almost 20 times more data with the same number of sequencing machines. However, it would have been impossible to increase the computing resources of the CNAG accordingly (and this is a problem common to biomedical research everywhere in the world). Hence, the development of more efficient analysis tools like GEM is essential to keep up with the increasing rate of production.

The GEM tools are a neat example of excellence research, and a world-class tool, entirely developed in Spain; although the project is lead by an Italian team member, the whole work has been carried out in Barcelona. This accomplishment was made possible by the very early adoption of next-generation sequencing machines at the CRG (in 2008), and the subsequent sustained investment in sequencing technologies by the Catalan and Spanish governments that culminated in the creation of the CNAG.

The research was funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Educaci?n y Ciencia (Consolider program), by the US National Institutes of Health/National Human Genome Research Institute, and by the European Union (READNA and ESGI programs).

  • But as we?ve said before, experience is what matters most on a mobile device, not whiz-bang specs. And in that regard, Apple certainly shines.

  • Sixty-two percent of parents surveyed said they would buy their child a mobile device if it would be used for academic purposes.

  • "It?s that last part that intrigues me, however. I know that many, many families and schools will be hard-pressed to digest even the 16 GB Wi-Fi model at $329 in K-12 -- ?educational discounts notwithstanding. As we know, Mr. Cook likes to brag about how well the iPads are doing in schools, but two factors remain missing: a really affordable price and strong corporate initiatives in the K-12 marketplace. Is Apple missing an opportunity?"

  • The next wave of that impact won't come from iBooks 3 or the new version of iBooks Author, which are both nice, but relatively minor updates. If anything from Tuesday's event will help push digital textbook adoption forward, it's the hardware. Specifically, the iPad Mini. By offering a $329 tablet, Apple suddenly made iPad adoption notably more affordable for cash-strapped school districts. Apple also released the fourth generation 10-inch iPad, which should help drive down the price of the company's older devices as well.?

    tags: apple iPad iPads

  • Tim Cook said there are 2,500 classrooms using iBooks textbooks right now, which Madan says is still a relatively small number. He does expect, however, for that to increase in the coming years. As schools allocate money to set up computer labs with limited funds, many find they can do it for less with iPads. The ?computer lab? has become the ?iPad lab? and the lower price of the iPad mini helps even more.
