New students at Stellenbosch University?s (SU) Faculty of Military Science were encouraged to become young leaders, like Joshua who led the Israelites into Canaan or David who faced Goliath.
Chaplain TJ Mara of the Military Academy in Saldanha told students who attended the Faculty?s academic opening on Wednesday, 30 January, that it is natural to be scared of uncharted territory and that it is often much easier to follow than to lead.

He encouraged them with the message given to Joshua in the book Deuteronomy: ?The Lord your God? will never leave you nor forsake you.?
Prof Julian Smith, Vice-Rector: Community Interaction and Personnel at SU, who represented the rector at the occasion, also emphasised the importance of leadership.
?This is a great opportunity to qualify yourself better. Unfortunately, many opportunities are lost because they are dressed in overalls and look like work.?
He said the University?s aim is to produce graduates who can play a role in society as critical and responsible citizens.
He described the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and SU?s Military Academy as strategic partners in the task to safeguard peace and deepen democracy in South Africa. Members of the SANDF are encouraged to attend the Military Academy so that they can be prepared to fulfil a certain role.
Prof Smith reminded the students that they are part of SU and to prove it he quizzed them on the Rector?s and Chairperson of the Student Council?s speeches at the official welcoming ceremony in Stellenbosch the previous week.

The answer the students knew best was the three things that have to happen?for you to become a true Matie ? you must cum a subject, an acorn must fall on your head and you must kiss someone in ?Die Laan?.
Prof Samuel Tshehla, Dean of the Faculty, welcomed everyone.
The evening?s academic opening followed the morning?s change of command parade where Brig Gen Lindile Yam handed over the reigns as Commandant of the Military Academy to Brig Gen Lawrence Khulekani Mbatha. He is the 19th Commandant of the Military Academy.
Both events were attended by dignitaries from SU and the SANDF.
