Chinese kidnapping suspect repatriated from Venezuela

Chinese police have escorted a major kidnapping suspect in Venezuela back to China for further investigation,according to a Public Security Ministry statement on Thursday.

The suspect, surnamed Xi, was escorted to the Beijing Capital International Airport at about 6:10 a.m. on Thursday, the statement said.

Xi had been involved in a number of robbing, kidnapping and racketeering cases targeting the Chinese nationals in the South American country since 2010, it said.

The Public Security Ministry sent a work team for initial investigation of the gang in April 2011 after receiving request from the Chinese embassy in Venezuela, it said.

The ministry sent a work team to the country again on Jan. 19 this year and caught Xi on Feb. 1 with the help of the Venezuelan police and army, it said.

Police in south China's Guangdong Province also caught two suspects of Xi's complices, the statement said.

Xi, 26, a native of Guangdong, stealt into Venezuela ten years ago. He joined a kidnapping gang after he failed to make profits in his own business, according to the Beijing News.

Xi will be sent to Guangdong for further investigation, according to the newspaper.
