Franchise Businesses Picking Up Steam - 8 News NOW

LAS VEGAS -- Across the United States, about 11,000 franchise businesses opened last year.

Owners of a Bonefish Grill in Las Vegas said they waited years for the right time to open up their dream business.

Bonefish franchisee Chris Leedom said he has always dreamed of opening up his own restaurant.

His dream is almost a reality with his restaurant under construction at Town Square.

"We've interviewed over a thousand applicants and we're going to be employing 120 residents of Las Vegas," he said.

Three years ago in the midst of an economic recession, Leedom said he wouldn't have dared to open up a restaurant.

But things are changing, he said.

"The economy seems to be starting to thrive again," he said.

He said the incentives for franchise owners are tough to pass up.

Matt Haller with the International Franchise Association said incentives are the reason franchises are seeing nationwide growth.

"There's incentives on the lending side," he said. "Incentives for minorities to get into franchising. Many franchisors offer discounts off of franchise fees. So that could be $5,000, $10,000 or $20,000.

Leedom said his restaurant is just weeks away from its grand opening.
