It is interesting to think about parenting from the notion that perhaps much of what we do is based on our own experiences as children and teens. All parents, no matter how skillful or terrible they are, influence their children later in life. By making a point to learn productive child raising skills, you will spare your own children of any bad experiences that you might have experienced early in your life. An important step toward becoming an ideal parent begins with learning how to developed into one. Therefore, it is necessary that you learn these skills which will allow you to be a positive influence in your children?s lives so they can be the same with their own.
It is never a good idea to have a full-blown argument or blow-out in front of the children. It is very unhealthy for parents to argue in front of children, for too many reasons. Children can sense when there are problems, and too often they will assume that they are the cause, and that is not a good thing. Parents think they are hiding problems from their children, but the tension is usually easily perceived. Raising children is about learning and teaching how to cope in all kinds of situations, so resolving a conflict is a great teaching tool. This approach can even be done in front of them, and they will have a good idea about how to use that in their own lives. If I take a look back at my childhood, I can remember a time when I quit at something because I didn?t think I was good enough. All of our memories are tied to an emotion of some kind, and like this event, it brings back painful feelings. It may not be easy to get your child to share with you about how they feel, but it is absolutely necessary to know how they are responding to life?s events. First, determine if the child really wants to participate. Give them the freedom to talk about how they feel with you. By letting your children talk it out with you and then you can decide what to do together. Even though it may not be easy, it?s a good idea to show your children how they fit into the big picture with their skills and see if there is another way they can succeed.
Many times parents order children to do things that they hate, so did this ever happen to you as a child? Nobody likes washing the dirty dishes, or doing normal chores, but that is not what we are talking about. Taking piano lessons, or having to try out for a particular sport, is the big thing that can be hard for children.
Good intentions of parents are not a good enough reason to force their children to play music or a sport that they don?t want to play. In the end, the usual result is poor performance and heaps of frustration for everybody. All children have natural inclinations, as well as areas of interest, and it is a parent?s responsibility to get the best out of each. We believe a large part of parenting involves accurate observation, taking in feedback and communicating with your child in a positive manner. Having a discussion involves multiple people, so be willing to include your child in that and not make it a speech.
