Stewart fine after sprint car accident in Canada

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Tony Stewart was not injured in a scary accident in Canada in which his sprint car rolled five times.

A day after Monday's wreck, Stewart was still scheduled for the World of Outlaws race Tuesday night at Ohsweken Speedway in Ontario. He's the defending race winner.

But the three-time NASCAR champion will sit out a pair of races this weekend as his team takes its cars to Indiana for repairs.

Stewart finished fourth Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and said he'd be in a race car every day this week. Although he declined to reveal his entire schedule, he said he was testing Wednesday, racing Thursday and would be at Pocono Raceway this weekend.

Spokesman Mike Arning says races Friday and Saturday night have been scrapped only for car repairs.

Budding Scientist Projects: Caterpillar Olympics

Our "caterpillar Olympics" course

My parents have an old birch tree in their backyard in Western Massachusetts. Each August, we watch a new generation of black-and-white? tussock moth caterpillars make its way down from the tree and toward the side of our house to weave cocoons. Last summer, there were so many of these fluffy creatures that they hung down from the trees on their lines of silk like decorations.

This year, we arrived at my parents? place too early to witness the great migration from birch tree to house siding. But we were lucky enough to find one? caterpillar and catch it. In the past, we?ve kept several of them in pickle jars ? with air holes punched in the lid ? and watched as they wove cocoons and turned into moths, then released them. This year, we?re not here long enough to observe the full lifecycle, so we decided to build the caterpillar its own ?Olympic park,? as my 7-year-old daughter calls it, and observe it climbing around. We used the inside of a box top, and built a slide, a seesaw, a tunnel, a ladder, a jungle gym, a bed and other ?equipment? out of paper. We?ve enjoyed watching the caterpillar?s agility as it makes its way around the course, tossing and waving its head from side to side once it reaches the top of a structure, perhaps searching for a higher tree branch to cling on to.?(Warning: Some people are allergic to the hairs on these caterpillars and can develop a rash. We haven?t had this problem, but to stay safe you may want to handle your caterpillars using small sticks or twigs)

Below is a video of our caterpillar on the slide.

Eco-Moonbats Compare Anti-Fossil Fuel Movement To Fight Against Apartheid In South Africa?

I?m sure the people who suffered through apartheid would beg to differ.

Via National Review:

For a moment during his climate speech on June 25, President Obama joined the fossil-fuel-divestment movement when he said, ?Invest. Divest. . . . Make yourself heard.? The leading group of divestment activists, 350.org, said, ?Obama?s shout-out to the fossil fuel divestment movement is a huge endorsement.? But what did Obama endorse, exactly?

The goal of the fossil-fuel-divestment movement is for ?institutional leaders to immediately freeze any new investment in fossil fuel companies, and divest from direct ownership and any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years.?

Divestment activists claim their movement rests on the same moral foundation as the movement to divest from South Africa during apartheid. The website gofossilfree.org, a spin-off of 350.org,?tells?the success story of the latter movement:

?By the mid-1980s, 155 campuses ? including some of the most famous in the country ? had divested from companies doing business in South Africa. 26 state governments, 22 counties, and 90 cities, including some of the nation?s biggest, took their money from multinationals that did business in the country. The South African divestment campaign helped break the back of the Apartheid government, and usher in an era of democracy and equality.?

Comparing the anti-fossil-fuel movement to the anti-apartheid movement is shameful. The anti-apartheid movement fought to free oppressed South Africans from their racist government. The fossil-fuel-divestment movement, in contrast, isn?t fighting political oppression or racism. It?s fighting the energy Americans rely on to live their lives.

Several Tips To Your Home Improvement Job - House with soul

Many people are scared of doing their own home improvement job alone. With the right information, you may do almost any project with the tools available to you. Use the information in this article to tackle that home improvement project you are considering.

The decorating style that you choose will narrow down your choices in several different areas. It's easy to change decorative styles in the middle of your project without recognizing it until it's too late.

Use old shoe boxes for an aesthetic touch that adds storage to your home. Use fabric or old wallpaper on the shoe boxes to give them a modern design. This way you get an extra storage solution while adding drama to a room.

Do not underestimate the amount of effort that a project will require. Create a list of all the things you must take care of.You may also consider getting a second opinion to ensure you overlooked something. You will save money if you start a project with full knowledge of its scope.

Bathrooms are also key to anyone planning to flip a property. Buyers can easily customize the majority of rooms, but they want the bathrooms to be in excellent condition right from the get-go. If your shower and sink aren't in good condition, replace them right away. Swap out your linoleum floors for tile if they're linoleum.

Invest in a snake to save money on plumbing house calls. You will avoid the need to purchase drain cleaners a lot. Drain snakes aren't for people who are inexperienced, so you may want to have a plumber show you how to use it the first time. Snakes come in a variety of sizes and lengths so make sure you get the one right for your pipe.

A good thing to do when you are wanting to keep up with home improvements is to put aside some money for needs that arise.

If you're unhappy with your current home, or think you don't have enough space, consider renovating it instead of moving completely.

One good home improvement project that can increase the home's value is finishing the basement. You can increase the total square footage of livable space for your family when adding in a basement. You could purchase finishing materials from discount stores. Finishing your basement can increase your home's resale value upwards of 30%.

An unattractive air conditioner is a necessary evil in many places around the U.S. It can easily be disguised with latticework or any other feature. You can use a large plant like Pampas grass as a disguise, do not plant them too closely.

Adding a new sink can help spruce up your kitchen. This can instantly improve your kitchen. You can get new sinks in many colors, colorful new sink.

Consider the good and the bad of an alarm on your home during showings.

Keep water usage in mind when making home improvement plans. Low-flow toilets, water-saving toilets and tank-less water heaters can be easily purchased and installed.

Be flexible with your home renovation projects. You may think that something has to be done within a certain period of time, but sometimes it may take longer. You may expect to spend a given amount of money, but you could go over it.

Install a ceiling fan to help the air better.

Upgrading your appliances goes a lot for the overall quality and value of your house. No matter what appliances you choose to replace, updating your home's appliances will go a long way in improving your home.

Determine how you need to use for eliminating debris.

If you have cabinets that need to be redone and you do not have a lot of money, consider refacing them instead of completely replacing them with new ones. It can be expensive to replace all the cabinets in your kitchen. You can reface your cabinets for just a small fraction of the price of replacement. You will get a whole new look and save some money.

Green improvements are an excellent choice. This can improve both your home and it's environmentally friendly. Installing an air conditioning or furnace that is energy efficient will make your home more comfortable, saves energy costs and helps keep the earth clean.

There is a easy solution to reduce the energy consumption when making your home improvements.

Keep in mind that the lowest bid you receive doesn't necessarily a good one. At the start, you may think the low price is the best, but you could end up paying a lot more in the long run.

If you hire a professional, check the contract to ensure that the work is guaranteed. If you don't check the contract, you will have no one but yourself to blame if it ends up that there's no guarantee on the work. It is important that you know that the work is guaranteed work.

It is the first thing any visitor sees. Paint your home and set out some attractive plants in pots. The small things will add up in the difference.

Keep a little box of fasteners available at all times. If you do this, the small hardware that you need will be readily available.

Upgrading appliances is a simple way to make home improvements to slash utility bills. Upgrading old appliances can pay will itself by producing energy consumption. Installing appliances can be simple and can make for an easy home improvement plan.

You may think it's difficult taking on home improvement jobs with professional contractors. With the tips from this article, you can accomplish some of your home improvement goals on your own.

Judge: Fed chair Bernanke should be deposed in AIG bailout case

Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke testifies before the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee July 18, 2013 in Washington, DC.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke should testify in the lawsuit by American International Group Inc's former chief Maurice "Hank" Greenberg against the United States over the insurer's 2008 bailout, a judge ruled on Monday.

Judge Thomas Wheeler of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims rejected the government's effort to keep Bernanke from being deposed, saying the Fed chairman was a "central figure" in the decision to bail out AIG.

"Indeed, the court cannot fathom having to decide this multi-billion dollar claim without the testimony of such a key government decision maker," Wheeler wrote. "These facts constitute 'extraordinary circumstances' for the taking of Mr. Bernanke's deposition."

(Watch: Who will succeed Bernanke?)

Greenberg's Starr International Co, which once had a 12 percent stake in AIG, is suing over the government's taking of a 79.9 percent stake in the insurer in September 2008 and a separate 1-for-20 reverse stock split in June 2009.

Greenberg's attorney, Alanna Rutherford of Boies, Schiller & Flexner, said his team was pleased with the judge's decision.

Earlier this year Greenberg tried to force AIG to join his suit against the government over the $182.3 billion bailout, an effort the company ultimately rejected.

Greenberg is seeking tens of billions of dollars in compensation over the losses he incurred when the government rescued the company.

"Because of Mr. Bernanke's personal involvement in the decision-making process to bail out AIG, it is improbable that Plaintiff would be able to obtain the same testimony or evidence from other persons or sources," Wheeler wrote in his four-page order.

Wheeler said the court would extend "appropriate deference and courtesies" to Bernanke in scheduling the testimony; the judge also said he would attend the deposition himself.

It is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 16, the order noted.

Tim Draper, Bloom Energy's Sridhar: Why now is the perfect time to start up in Japan

San Francisco-based mobile payment startup Square started swiping credit cards in Japan two months ago. Bloom Energy Corp. is about to start selling its power-generating Bloom Boxes in Japan.

Advocates of U.S.-Japan business ties are hoping to build on these relatively isolated but promising expansions by fostering more startup activity. That's both in the form of home-grown Japanese entrepreneurship and by encouraging more American startups to jump into the market.

The Japanese startup cheerleaders include some serious Silicon Valley venture capital muscle.

?The Japanese economy has been flat for a very long time,? said Draper Fisher Jurvetson co-founder Tim Draper at the 2013 Japan Innovation Awards held Friday by the Japan Society of Northern California and Stanford?s U.S. Asia Technology Management Center at Stanford University. ?Now is the time for the entrepreneurs to soar.?

Japan?s economy remains sluggish, especially compared to neighboring China?s recent explosive growth, with even optimistic outlooks for Japan forecasting decades more of GDP stagnation. But on top of Bloom Energy and Square, incubators have started popping up in tech-savvy Japanese cities, according to University of Pennsylvania research.

Draper himself has also helped establish the Draper Nexus venture capital firm, with offices in Silicon Valley and Tokyo dedicated to funding Japanese entrepreneurs. The firm is part of DFJ?s international network of independent venture firms.

For Bloom Energy CEO KR Sridhar, whose company was honored with an award at the event Friday, the big Bloom opening in Japan came just last week.

10 Worst College Football Uniforms of the BCS Era

Wyoming's school fight song, "Ragtime Cowboy Joe," was composed by Lewis F. Muir and Maurice Abrahams. But in order to properly epitomize their uniforms, they ought to commission an updated version by The Clash.

The whole ensemble, when ingested at once, looks like a banana split after three days left on the table?the gross, brown, subpar hot fudge melting and coalescing with the rotten yellow fruit to form a puke-colored monstrosity.

Bonus points (in the wrong direction) since, unlike many of the jerseys on this list, Wyoming wears this every. single. week.

Historic mosque in Homs falls to Syrian goverment troops

DAMASCUS, Syria -- Syrian government forces captured a historic mosque in the central city of Homs on Saturday, expelling rebels who had been in control of the 13th century landmark for more than a year.

State-run news agency SANA quoted a military official as saying that troops took control of the Khalid Ibn al-Walid Mosque in the heavily disputed northern neighborhood of Khaldiyeh.

Syrian TV aired a report Saturday night with footage from inside the mosque, showing heavy damage and the tomb's dome knocked out.

The footage showed debris strewn on the floor and a portion of the mosque appeared to have been burned.

The mosque, famous for its nine domes and two minarets, has been a symbol for rebels in the city that is known as "the capital of the revolution." On Monday, government troops shelled the mosque, damaging the tomb of Ibn al-Walid, a revered figure in Islam.

A Homs-based activist who identified himself only by his nickname, Abu Bilal, said regime forces now control more than 60 percent of Khaldiyeh. He said events were moving "very fast."

On top of its symbolic value, Homs is also a geographic lynchpin in Syria.

The main highway from Damascus to the north as well as the coastal region, which is a stronghold of President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, runs through Homs.

Both rebels and the regime place a high strategic value on the city.

Tim Cook May Not Know Why, But Samsung Is Winning in China

Slashdot writes, An anonymous reader writes with this interesting snippet about the state of mobile tech in China: "Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook believes that 'over the arc of time' China is a huge opportunity for his pathbreaking company. But time looks to be on the side of rival Samsung Electronics, which has been around far longer and penetrated much deeper into the world's most populous country. Apple this week said its revenue in Greater China, which also includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, slumped 43 per cent to $4.65 billion from the previous quarter. That was also 14 per cent lower from the year-ago?

Thousands protest government at Tunisia funeral

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? Thousands joined a funeral march through Tunisia's capital on Saturday with the body of assassinated opposition politician Mohammed Brahmi, chanting slogans in a display of the anger threatening the survival of a government once seen as a model for democracy in the region.

Adding to the tension in the North African country, a bomb exploded in the early morning underneath a car at the port in Tunis. Though there were no injuries, the rare attack helped deepen the sense of unease in Tunisia, where two opposition politicians have been gunned down in the last six months, apparently by the same weapon.

The latest assassination Thursday exacerbated the distrust between the ruling coalition led by moderate Islamists and the opposition, which has demanded the dissolution of the government because of its failures to rein in Islamist extremists, improve the economy and manage the transition to democracy.

"Down with the party of the Brotherhood," chanted mourners following the body of Brahmi, referring to the ruling Ennahda Party's affiliation with the regional Muslim Brotherhood religious group. "The people demand the fall of the regime."

Brahmi's body was taken in a military vehicle draped with a massive Tunisian flag through the city under a blazing summer sun to the Jellaz cemetery, where fellow assassinated politician Chokri Belaid was laid to rest in February.

The Interior Ministry, citing physical evidence and witnesses, said Friday that Brahmi's assassin was Boubakr Hakim, a known militant and weapons smuggler who was part of the same al-Qaida linked cell that murdered Belaid back in February.

Hakim allegedly shot Brahmi 14 times outside his home Thursday in full view of his family with the same 9mm semi-automatic handgun used to kill Belaid, before he sped away on the back of a moped.

The assassination has rocked the country and provoked anti-government demonstrations around the country by protesters holding the moderate Islamists elected in 2011 responsible for the lack of security in the country.

A 48-year-old political activist with the same leftist coalition as the assassinated Brahmi died Friday night after being hit in the head by a tear gas canister during a demonstration outside a police station in the southern mining town of Gafsa, said Abdessattar Ben Moussa, president of the League for Human Rights.

Protesters also clashed with police in the interior cities of Al-Kef and Sidi Bouzid.

The morning bomb blast caused no injuries and only blew out windows in the area but it represents a dangerous escalation for a country that has yet to experience serious terrorist incidents like its neighbors Algeria and Libya.

"As we were leaving the station for a routine patrol, we saw a suspicious package under the car," said police officer Mourad Mliki told The Associated Press. "We went back to the station to tell our superiors and there was a huge explosion ? it was set off remotely."

Mohammed Ali Aroui, the police spokesman told the state news agency that the remains of the explosive device were being examined by a special team.

"The explosion was so strong it was like an earthquake," said Walid Khammar, a fish seller living near the police station whose car was damaged by the blast.

Tunisians overthrew their dictator in January 2011, inspiring the pro-democracy uprisings of the Arab Spring across the region. The long-repressed moderate Islamist Ennahda dominated subsequent elections and now rules in coalition with two secular parties.

With two political assassinations and a faltering economy, the opposition says the government has lost its legitimacy and is demanding a new government.

Some 42 members of opposition parties announced late Friday their withdrawal from the 217-member elected assembly charged with completing the countries new constitution.

The opposition accuses Ennahda of turning a blind eye to the rise of ultraconservative Islamist movements known as Salafis, following the revolution ? especially those willing to use violence to push their views.

The government had said it did not want to replicate the repressive anti-Islamist policies of overthrown dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali but when thousands of salafis attacked the U.S. embassy in September over an anti-Islamic film produced in the U.S., the government cracked down on the movement.

In April, soldiers patrolling in a mountainous region near the Algerian tripped a roadside bomb causing severe injuries and sparking a search of the region that revealed the remains of training camps and more hidden explosives.

NBA free agency news roundup: Gerald Henderson going back to Charlotte, Elias Harris gets deal with Lakers

Gerald Henderson is re-signing with the Bobcats, Elias Harris is joining the Lakers, and the rest of the day's NBA news.

One of the notable restricted free agents still available on the NBA's free agent list is about to come off the board. Gerald Henderson is set to sign a three-year, $18 million contract extension with the Charlotte Bobcats that should be finalized by early next week, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

The re-signing of Henderson was a critical move for a Bobcats team that has made strives toward legitimacy this offseason. Charlotte had previously signed former Jazz forward Al Jefferson to a three-year deal to give the team some desperately needed scoring in the front court. The Bobcats used the No. 4 pick in the 2013 draft on Indiana center Cody Zeller, who drew rave reviews for his summer league performance. Throw in Henderson, the team's second leading scorer last year, and Charlotte could have its best team since the 2010 squad that reached the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Henderson is an athletic wing known for finishing strong at the rim, and also a sound perimeter defender. The 25-year-old showed improvements in his three-point stroke last season by hitting a career-high 33 percent of his shots from deep. If Henderson can continue to work on his efficiency from outside, the Bobcats could have a promising backcourt with he and Kemba Walker.

At Rufus on Fire, Ben Swanson detailed why it was so difficult for the team and player to agree to terms:

Both sides seemed to be separated on Henderson's value, resulting in the what seemed to be a deal fated to never come to agreement. The first news to leak was that the team and the four-year veteran were a vast distance apart in negotiations, resulting in the Bobcats searching out possible sign-and-trade partners. Recent reports said the two sides had continued discussions but were still far apart on the issue of compensation. However, there have been zero reports of Henderson signing any offer sheets, so the market demand for Henderson looks like it wouldn't meet his financial desire either.

Henderson averaged a career-best 15.5 points per game last season for Charlotte.

Mozgov gets $14 million from Nuggets

Timofey Mozgov is re-signing with the Denver Nuggets on a three-year, $14 million contract. Every Timofey Mozgov post is legally obligated to feature an embedded video of the time Blake Griffin dunked all over him:

*Memories*

Mozgov appeared in only 41 games for Denver last season while playing behind starter Kosta Koufos and JaVale McGee, but he should see more time this season after the Nuggets dealt Koufos for power forward Darrell Arthur earlier this offseason. Mozgov averaged only 2.6 points and 2.6 rebounds per game this past season, but he's a solid interior defender thanks to his massive 7'1, 250-pound frame.

The 27-year-old Mozgov has the first two seasons of his new deal guaranteed, while the third will be a team option.

Denver Stiffs outlined a few reasons for skepticism over the contract. Here's the first point:

Denver needed to re-sign Mozgov and the leverage was all his after the team traded starting center Kosta Koufos on draft night. The NBA is sever-footer starved and you typically have to pay big for bigs. While this deal for Mozgov is reasonable by itself, it looks odd when compared to 24 year-old Koufos' deal that will pay him just $3 million per season over the next two years. So, you can say the Nuggets determined that Mozgov was worth $5 million more over the life of the contract, but worth $3.2 million more over the next two seasons.

Elias Harris agrees to two-year deal with Lakers

Elias Harris went undrafted after a stellar career at Gonzaga, but the Los Angeles Lakers saw enough from the 6'8 forward in summer league to give him a two-year contract that includes a "significant" guarantee in the first season, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

The 24-year-old Harris lacks the quickness and range that most NBA small forwards boast, but at 6'8, 240 pounds, he does have tremendous size. Harris shot only 17 percent from three point as a senior for the Bulldogs, but he connected on 41.4 percent of his threes as a junior. He also shot over 50 percent from the field in every season at Gonzaga.

Harris posted 10.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game for a 3-2 Lakers team in Las Vegas Summer League.

Roberson only gets 80 percent of rookie scale from Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder haven't signed a free agent this offseason in hopes of staying just below the luxury tax threshold, a strategy that will have financial consequences for the team's rookies, as well. Most rookies get 120 percent of their slotted scale without much hassle, but Andre Roberson wasn't so lucky.

According to Mark Deeks of Sham Sports, Roberson has agreed to sign for 80 percent of the slot scale. He'll earn $740,560 next season and $1.16 million in his second season. The Thunder now have $70,375,510 committed in salaries, just below the luxury tax line of $71,600,000.

Roberson was selected at No. 26 overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2013 NBA Draft, and was later traded to the Thunder.

Nets agree to terms with Alan Anderson

The Brooklyn Nets continued to mold their bench on Friday by agreeing to a two-year contract with guard Alan Anderson. Anderson averaged 10.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game for the Raptors last year, but did it on just 38.3 percent shooting from the field. While Anderson's overall efficiency was not good, he is a 34.9 percent shooter from three-point territory over his career.

Anderson, 30, spent four years playing overseas in between stops with the Bobcats and Raptors. He'll join a Brooklyn bench that already includes Andrei Kirilenko, Andray Blatche, Shaun Livingston and Jason Terry.

47 rescued from Gulf of Mexico rig after natural gas blowout

AP Photo/Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement

This photo released by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement shows natural gas spewing from the Hercules 265 drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana, Tuesday, July 23, 2013.

By Kevin McGill, The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS ? Natural gas flowed uncontrolled from a well off the Louisiana coast on Tuesday after a blowout that forced the evacuation of 47 workers aboard a drilling rig, authorities said.

No injuries or fires were reported. The federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said inspectors flying over the site Tuesday saw a light sheen covering an area about a half-mile by 50 feet. However, it was dissipating quickly.

The bureau says the blowout happened about 55 miles offshore.

Earlier this month, a gas well flowed for several days before being sealed off the Louisiana coast.

In 2010, an oil rig exploded off the state's coast, leading to a blowout that spewed millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico in the worst offshore disaster in the United States.

Tuesday's blowout occurred near an unmanned offshore gas platform that was not currently producing natural gas, said Aileen Angelico, spokeswoman for the bureau. The workers were aboard a portable drilling rig known as a jackup rig, operated by Hercules Offshore. Hercules said in a news release that it was operating the rig for Walter Oil & Gas Corp.

Walter Oil & Gas reported to the BSEE that the rig was completing a "sidetrack well" ? a means of re-entering the original well bore, Angelico said.

The purpose of the sidetrack well in this instance was not immediately clear. Industry websites say sidetrack wells are sometimes drilled to remedy a problem with the existing well bore.

"It's a way to overcome an engineering problem with the original well," Ken Medlock, an energy expert at Rice University's Baker Institute said. "They're not drilled all the time, but it's not new."

A woman who answered the phone at Walter Oil & Gas in Houston said company officials would provide information later.

Publication of Flynn's unfinished novel delayed

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Publication of best-selling author Vince Flynn's unfinished novel is postponed indefinitely after his death last month.

Flynn's longtime editor, Emily Bestler, made the announcement Thursday.

Bestler says the Minnesota author hadn't completed the manuscript when he died June 19 at age 47, more than two years after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The book, titled "The Survivor," was planned for release this fall.

Bestler says in a statement it's too soon to know how much of the book was written or whether Flynn had made arrangements in case he could not complete the book. So she says publication is listed as "postponed indefinitely" instead of "canceled."

Flynn wrote the Mitch Rapp counterterrorism thriller series. His 14th novel, "The Last Man," was published last year.

The Economy Wouldn?t Be So Rotten If Barack Obama Were President!

Today President Obama ?pivoted? back to the economy for something like the 11th time. Paul set out the embarrassing history of Obama?s pirouettes here:

?Obama Pivots to Jobs Tour at End of Scandal Filled Week? (ABC News, 5/18/13)

?Obama?s Texas Trip An Attempt To Refocus On Jobs, Economy? (Washington Times, 5/8/13)

?Obama Pivots To Jobs As Key Theme? (Politico, 1/8/10)

?Obama Turns Focus To Job Creation? (Associated Press, 12/5/09)

So what did Obama tell us in his speech today? ?Washington? has taken its eye off the ball by failing to focus on the economy!

But with this endless parade of distractions and political posturing and phony scandals, Washington has taken its eye off the ball. And I am here to say this needs to stop. This needs to stop.

So after 4 1/2 years in office, Obama is still campaigning against ?Washington,? as though his administration?s failures have nothing to do with him. In recent speeches, Obama has taken to counting down the number of days he still has to serve as president; the number now stands at somewhere around 1,200. We can be sure of one thing: on not a single one of those 1,200 days will Obama ever take responsibility for the consequences of any act or omission he has committed in office.

Chinese Businessman Seeks to Build Nicaraguan Canal

Chinese flag.png

The idea of building a $40 billion canal in Nicaragua, Central America?s poorest nation, seems highly improbable. Yet Chinese businessman Wang Jing insists he is serious about constructing such a waterway, and Nicaraguan lawmakers have given his Hong Kong?based company, HKND Group, a green light to proceed. Meanwhile, the ruling Sandinista Party is depicting the canal project as a symbol of national pride (?Opposing it is unpatriotic,? said one congressman) and promising that it will greatly reduce Nicaraguan poverty (?Today is a day of hope for the poor of this country,? declared another legislator). President Daniel Ortega has offered his robust support, vowing that the project ?will help us conquer our final independence.? On June 14, Ortega officially signed a 50-year concession that will allow HKND Group to build and operate the canal.

But will the project ever actually get completed? Most experts are doubtful. ?It?s not going to happen, that was my first reaction,? Harvard Business School professor Noel Maurer, the co-author of a book on the Panama Canal, told the New York Times. ?A pipe dream might be too strong, but I would just consider it a really bad investment.?

Leave aside the fact that Wang Jing has only visited Nicaragua two times (?for a combined 48 hours,? according to journalist Tim Rogers) and seems to have a shaky grasp of its geography: Even if Wang had spent his entire life in the country, his proposed canal would still face major logistical and environmental challenges. Green activists are already denouncing the idea, warning that it will harm Nicaragua?s ecosystems and jeopardize its water supply, since all the proposed canal routes travel through Lake Nicaragua. One environmental consortium has complained that the project will ?extend, expand, dredge, or reduce bodies of water and water resources that are subject to protection and conservation safeguards.?

A bit of historical background: Interest in a trans-oceanic Nicaraguan canal dates back to the 19th century. In 1849, Cornelius Vanderbilt signed a contract with the Nicaraguan government to build such a canal, but his plan ultimately collapsed. In the late 1880s, American companies tried to spearhead a similar canal project, but their plan failed, too. In 1897, President William McKinley established the Nicaragua Canal Commission, which actually issued recommendations on a possible route. But the project was stalled by feasibility concerns and diplomatic obstacles. In 1903, it was eclipsed by the Panama Canal Treaty. More recently, in 2008, then?Russian president Dmitry Medvedev agreed to study the possibility of building a Nicaraguan canal. Last year, Nicaraguan lawmakers authorized the construction of a $30 billion canal, though they did not specify who would finance it.

PROtique? is more than happy to work with business owners regardless of their unique circumstances in order to provide necessary coverage to limit personal liability.

Home based business insurance allows for owners to effectively protect the brand and assets of businesses which they've worked hard to build over the years. A specific policy, for example, can insure assets against theft or damage due to weather. Having a safety net in place will not only allow for an owner to sleep better at night but will prevent them from incurring a financial loss that may otherwise be too much to withstand.

PROtique? has the knowledge required to create the perfect individual policy geared towards home-based beauty care businesses. The reason they're so proficient at writing such policies is because that is all they do. PROtique? is a specialized insurance firm -- the only one like it in Canada -- that offers policies exclusively to beauty care professionals. So regardless if the business is as startup or an established spa with a list of repeat customers, PROtique? has individualized plans at costs that everyone can afford.

The best news is that because each policy is customizable, gaps in coverage that are often found in standard policies can be greatly reduced or eliminated altogether. Business owners can rest assured knowing that the professionals at PROtique? have their back when things get rough. When situations arise where insurance coverage is required in order to cover a loss or injury, it is imperative to know that business owners can trust the insurance company to act in their best interests. Investec approves R8bn debt for renewables

Investec Bank Plc said it?s able to provide R8 billion in debt funding for clean- energy projects in South Africa as the country adds wind and solar output.

The money would be used to finance plants in the nation?s third renewables bidding round, Robert Gecelter, a member of Investec?s Project and Infrastructure Finance team, said today in Johannesburg.

South Africa, seeking to cut dependence on coal for power, intends to add 3,725 megawatts of renewable-energy capacity by the end of 2016 with five tenders. That may help state utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. meet demand as it struggles to fund maintenance and expansion in the continent?s biggest economy.

?We expect round three to be very competitive,? Gecelter told reporters. The second round attracted bids from Electricite de France SA, Tata Power Co. and Acciona SA. The deadline for submissions in the third is Aug. 19.

Investec has participated in about R20 billion of financing for South African clean-energy and renewable ventures so far, including R6.4 billion of debt, according to Fazel Moosa, head of the Project and Infrastructure Finance team. The projects are needed to ensure sufficient electricity supply for industry, he said.

?Our power supply is actually constraining growth? in the country, Moosa said. The bank is also ?looking broadly in Africa? for projects.

Dolphins 'call each other by name'

Scientists have found further evidence that dolphins call each other by "name".

Research has revealed that the marine mammals use a unique whistle to identify each other.

A team from the University of St Andrews in Scotland found that when the animals hear their own call played back to them, they respond.

The study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr Vincent Janik, from the university's Sea Mammal Research Unit, said: "(Dolphins) live in this three-dimensional environment, offshore without any kind of landmarks and they need to stay together as a group.

"These animals live in an environment where they need a very efficient system to stay in touch."

Signature whistles

It had been-long suspected that dolphins use distinctive whistles in much the same way that humans use names.

Previous research found that these calls were used frequently, and dolphins in the same groups were able to learn and copy the unusual sounds.

But this is the first time that the animals response to being addressed by their "name" has been studied.

End Quote Dr Vincent Janik University of St Andrews

To investigate, researchers recorded a group of wild bottlenose dolphins, capturing each animal's signature sound.

They then played these calls back using underwater speakers.

"We played signature whistles of animals in the group, we also played other whistles in their repertoire and then signature whistles of different populations - animals they had never seen in their lives," explained Dr Janik.

The researchers found that individuals only responded to their own calls, by sounding their whistle back.

The team believes the dolphins are acting like humans: when they hear their name, they answer.

Dr Janik said this skill probably came about to help the animals to stick together in a group in their vast underwater habitat.

He said: "Most of the time they can't see each other, they can't use smell underwater, which is a very important sense in mammals for recognition, and they also don't tend to hang out in one spot, so they don't have nests or burrows that they return to."

The researchers believe this is the first time this has been seen in an animal, although other studies have suggested some species of parrot may use sounds to label others in their group.

Dr Janik said that understanding how this skill evolved in parallel very different groups of animals could tell us more about how communication developed in humans.

LINDEN - After five years as head baseball coach at Linden High, Joe Piombo is moving on.

Piombo has taken a newly created position at McNair High as an on-campus suspension instructor, meaning he'll work with students facing short-term disciplinary action. Rather than serving the traditional at-home suspension, students will report to Piombo's class for the length of their suspensions.

"It's a career move," Piombo said. "I was looking for a different challenge. It's hard to walk away from Linden. I had to remove the emotional part and look at it as a career move for me and my family.

"I think the hardest part is the kids. Our kids start playing for us in the eighth grade. To make that decision now was hard. You look at kids like (Justin) Giovannoni and (Bailey) Wright, we've probably played 100 to 150 games together. It's not an easy decision."

The move has nothing to do with athletics. Quincey Noble, who's been the head baseball coach at McNair since the varsity program's inception in 2007, isn't going anywhere. Piombo said he'll likely help Noble as an assistant.

Piombo, a 1979 Stagg High graduate, has worked as a football coach and baseball coach at Linden off and on since 1989. He took over as head varsity baseball coach in 2009, replacing Bob Amerman, a Stockton Athletic Hall of Famer who won more than 600 games over 43 years.

Piombo's teams went 91-31-2 and won three of the past four Mother Lode League championships. This spring, the Lions went a perfect 15-0 in the MLL (24-6-1 overall), and were one out away from advancing to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V finals before suffering a 5-3 loss to Escalon in the final game of a best-of-three series.

Netflix gains 630K subscribers as 2Q earnings soar

(AP) ? Netflix's second-quarter earnings more than quadrupled as the revival of the comedy series "Arrested Development" attracted more subscribers.

Despite the financial gains, the report released Monday flopped on Wall Street because the return of new "Arrested Development" episodes after a seven-year absence didn't add as many U.S. subscribers as many investors had been hoping. Netflix's high-flying stock sank $20.96, or 8 percent, to $241 in extended trading after the numbers came out.

Netflix picked up about 630,000 U.S. subscribers during the three months ending in June. That performance was slightly above the mid-range target set by Netflix Inc.'s management in April. The Los Gatos, Calif., company had predicted it might end the period with as many as 880,000 more subscribers ? a goal that many investors evidently were hoping would be reached.

Expectations had been raised by the Memorial Day weekend release of 15 new "Arrested Development" episodes. The comedy starring Jason Bateman and Michael Cera had built a cult following before its cancellation by the Fox network in 2006 after three seasons.

In a letter to shareholders, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings credited "Arrested Development" for providing a "small but noticeable bump" in subscribers. He praised the company for being able to add more subscribers during the first half of this year than it did last year, despite intensifying competition from other Internet video services run by Amazon.com Inc. and Hulu.

Netflix has added 2.7 million subscribers so far this year, up from 2.5 million at the same time last year.

Hastings was scheduled to elaborate on his views about the past quarter and the rest of the year beginning at 6 p.m. EDT in an unusual talk-show format that will be streamed live over the Internet.

The second-quarter gains leave Netflix with 29.8 million U.S. subscribers to an $8 monthly service that streams video to Internet-connected devices.

Netflix also added 605,000 international subscribers in the second quarter to boost its total customers outside the U.S to 7.75 million.

The company's DVD-by-mail rental service continued a gradual demise as more people embrace the convenience of Internet streaming instead of waiting for discs to be delivered. Netflix lost another 475,000 DVD subscribers in the second quarter, leaving the company with 7.5 million on that side of its service. Netflix has been pushing people toward streaming anyhow because the company believes DVDs are destined for obsolescence and doesn't want to spend a lot on the business any longer.

Netflix earned $29.5 million, or 49 cents per share, in the quarter, up from $6.2 million, or 11 cents per share, a year earlier.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet had forecast earnings of 40 cents per share.

Netflix's revenue climbed 20 percent from last year to $1.07 billion, mirroring analyst projections.

In the current quarter ending in September, Netflix predicted it will add 690,000 to 1.49 million U.S. subscribers.

Life sentences for 6 men who raped Swiss woman in India

An Indian court on Saturday handed down life sentences against the six men accused of gang-raping a Swiss tourist on March 16 in central India, local media said.

Those accused of taking part in the rape, between ages 20-30, were convicted by a court in Datia in the state of Madhya Pradesh, with the sentence announced by the court's judge, Kumar Sharma.

The prosecutor who took part in the trial, Rajendra Tiwari, said he was "satisfied" with the life sentences, the maximum penalty for sex crimes according to a law passed in March by the Indian Parliament.

The judge imposed the maximum penalty on the six convicts even though they were not submitted to a police lineup, since the rape took place at night and the woman did not see the faces of her assailants.

The Swiss tourist, 39, was bicycling around India with her husband when they were attacked by several men one night as they were camping. The men gave the husband a beating and raped the woman.

The incident had a particular impact in the media since attacks on foreigners are unusual in the Asian giant.

The sexual abuse of the Swiss tourist is added to the many cases of rape that have been reported in the Indian press since December, when a young 23-year-old woman died after being gang-raped and tortured on a bus in New Delhi.

That crime sparked an unprecedented debate about the condition of women in the Asian country and led Parliament to pass a law in March that toughened sentences for sexual aggressors.

The verdicts against the minor and four of the five adults implicated in the December rape case are expected to be announced at the end of July.

A fifth adult who was among the accused committed suicide in prison last March, authorities said. EFE

HEIDELBERG, 19 July 2013 Scientists have identified higher levels of a receptor protein found on the surface of human breast tumour cells that may serve as a new drug target for the treatment of breast cancer. The results, which are published today in EMBO Molecular Medicine, show that elevated levels of the protein Ret, which is short for "Rearranged during transfection", are associated with a lower likelihood of survival for breast cancer patients in the years following surgery to remove tumours and cancerous tissue.

"Our findings suggest that Ret kinase might be an attractive and novel alternative therapeutic target in selected groups of breast cancer patients," remarked Nancy Hynes, Professor at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Re-search and the University of Basel, Switzerland. "Initial experiments in mice that serve as model organisms for the study of breast cancer have revealed that specific inhibitors significantly block the spread of cancer and decrease the number of metastatic tumours found in the lungs."

The scientists examined tumour tissue microarrays of more than 100 breast cancer patients who had undergone surgery to remove their tumours. Antibodies were used to detect the levels of Ret in the samples. In other experiments, four different cancer cell lines were used and injected into mice to study the effects of Ret inhibitors on the progress and spread of the cancer.

"Our findings demonstrate that blocking Ret kinase not only decreases the growth of tumours but also impacts the potential of the cancer to spread throughout the body," Hynes said.

Targeting receptor tyrosine kinase enzymes with antibodies or small molecular inhibitors is a clinically validated approach for cancer therapy. However, only a subset of patients are eligible for these types of treatments which makes it essential to discover additional inhibitors that could be useful in breast cancer therapy.
