What Processed Food Looks Like during Digestion Of Course It's Not Pretty [Video]

If you ever wondered how your body handled all those packaged ramen noodles you ate during college, this video?s for you. Stefani Bardin, a TEDxManhattan fellow, wants to learn how digestion differs between food chock full of preservatives and food that can actually go bad in a day.

To create this video, she and her collaborator swallowed a camera pill along with their meals (which included Gatorade and Gummi bears). The camera?here, called an M2A pill (for ?mouth to anus?)?produced a stop-motion video down to the small intestine. Such cameras have limited medical uses, but boy, they sure do create a fun ?Fantastic Voyage?-like experience. The video?s actual alimentary angle begins at the two-minute mark.

Next on the list ought to be hot dogs, considering all the chemicals in them.

LG 55LW5600 Review

So after lots of research I arrived on purchasing this tv. I understood I needed to obtain a bigger screen and also, since three dimensional is how its heading towards I believed it was my best choice. Used to do lots of reading through around the distinction between passive and active three dimensional and overall the advantages to passive appear to over-shadow the couple of disadvantages. I believe the three dimensional looks really awesome also LG 55LW5600 will have to be personalized for your individual preferences in the beginning nevertheless its really awesome whenever you find your configurations. I required the recommendation of some other review and visited hometheaterdotcom for my calibration configurations and also the picture does look awesome. I like the neighborhood dimming feature, despite the fact that inside a dark room on the dark screen such as the movie credits you can observe the sunshine versions in which the test is I still consider its a properly used funciton.LG 55LW5600 The television includes a great picture and also the features it?s are actually awesome. I particularly love the nero media home which produces a neat little linked network involving the computer as well as your tv (for those who have wi-fi) and enables you to definitely view content on your pc like music or movies and play using your tv. Forget about tieing in the laptop to look at movies. Hulu works just a little slow so thats just a little annoying nevertheless its still nice to not need to run my laptop or xbox 360 just for doing things. Overall I believe this can be a great tv and when you are able to tolerate the slightly better outer edges (hence edge lit) this tv is actually awesome. And That I stress around the slight cuz with local dimming switched on it is not hardly noticeable. The television includes a slew of applications which i havent examined however i just couldnt overcome the truly nice nero feature. For that cost this can be a great tv with no three dimensional?the three dimensional causes it to be almost a steal.

Get Rid Of The Clutter In Your Garage ? Buy The Right Garage ...

Can?t take it anymore? Has the sight of your garage become too unsightly that you are committed today more than ever to put some organization into it? Achieving this is no different from doing other home improvement projects. You need to plan things carefully, especially when choosing the right garage cabinets. But how do you deal with this?

Of course, any successful purchase should begin with developing a budget. By knowing how much you can comfortably spend for your cabinets, you can get started. You have a number of factors to account for but your goal is to set an amount reasonable enough for you to get a quality storage cabinet that would last as long as your home does.

When this is done, your next step is to measure the space that can be dedicated to the storage. Here you have to ensure that you leave enough parking space. After taking the dimensions and before deciding on whether to get the slatwall or the overhead storage or any of the options that the online company, www.redlinegaragegear.com offers, make sure you have taken an inventory of your storage needs.

By taking an account of what you intend to keep inside, you can make the right choice of cabinet design and configuration. Also, determine ahead whether you want a workbench with the storage and how many locked cabinets you intend to keep. At this point you should also decide on whether to have modular or a built in storage. The benefit of having a modular cabinet is that you can bring it with you in case you have to move.

When you already have a clear idea of the type of garage storage that meets your qualifications, you can now check for a manufacturer. Make a search online as this can give you a wider selection. Don?t let pass the opportunity to check www.redlinegaragegear.com, which can provide you with excellent garage solutions along with a lifetime warranty on the products. In this case, you no longer have to bother about quality and durability because such is already given.

You should just focus on sorting out your options and picking the one that perfectly meets your standards. While you look at your choices, pay close attention to the designs as well. Make sure that the color and the style you choose complement your home. See to it that both functionality and aesthetic quality are achieved so that you can say that you get the best value for your money.

(AP) ? Syrian refugees fleeing to Jordan for their lives described a dramatic escalation in violence and a mounting toll of dead and wounded in the southern city of Daraa and the country's battered central region.

Medical workers in neighboring Jordan prepared blood donations to send to Daraa, the city where the uprising against President Bashar Assad erupted nearly a year ago, as the regime struggled to extinguish major pockets of dissent with intensive shelling.

Activists said at least 26 civilians were killed Friday, many of them in the rebellious central city of Homs, where shells slammed into rebel-held residential areas.

The fighting in Homs, coupled with fresh violence in Daraa, has triggered a new wave of wounded refugees crossing the border into Jordan.

"Government troops are shelling everything, whether it's buildings, people, houses. They consider us nothing. They want to eliminate us totally," said Seif, a 22-year-old who was receiving medical treatment in a Jordanian hospital along with other Syrian refugees.

Seif said he was working with army defectors from the Free Syrian Army, helping retrieve the wounded from collapsed buildings and homes, when he was hit by shrapnel in his leg. He could not receive medical treatment in Syria, fearing he would be arrested and killed by pro-Assad gunmen.

"Our crime was helping people," said Seif, who gave only his first name for fear of reprisals by Assad's government. "But the regime accuses us of being terrorists."

Attacks on Daraa, where the uprising was touched off last March by the arrest of teenagers who scrawled anti-regime graffiti on the walls of the provincial capital, have escalated in the past few days.

Mohamed Ahmed Iyad of the Jordanian aid group Kitab and Sunna, which provides aid to some 10,000 Syrians in Jordan, said his group was preparing blood bags and other medical supplies to send to Daraa.

In the past two days alone, 170 families ? around 850 people ? have fled to Ramtha, located just seven miles (11 kilometers) from the Syrian border, Iyad said. Most were from Daraa.

Syria has seen one of the bloodiest crackdowns since the wave of Arab uprisings began more than a year ago. The U.N. says more than 5,400 people were killed in Syria last year alone, and the number of dead and injured continues to rise daily. In addition, 25,000 people are estimated to have sought refuge in neighboring countries and more than 70,000 are internally displaced.

By contrast, deaths in Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen have numbered in the hundreds. While Libya's toll is unknown and likely higher than Syria's, the conflict differed there: Early on, it became an outright civil war between two armed sides.

Homs, a province in central Syria that stretches from the border with Lebanon in the west to the frontiers with Iraq and Jordan in the east, has been one of the key centers of opposition to Assad.

As the uprising has become more militarized in recent months, with army defectors battling regime forces almost daily, the rebels have taken control of small parts of the province, including neighborhoods in the city of Homs and the nearby town of Rastan.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and other activists said shells slammed into the Homs neighborhoods of Baba Amr, Bayadah, Khaldiyeh and Inshaat on Friday, killing at least 13 people. Syrian troops have been attacking the neighborhoods since Feb. 4.

Two people were killed by security forces in Daraa, and 11 others in various attacks across the country, the group said. Syria has banned most foreign journalists and keeps tight restrictions on the local press, making verification of death toll reports impossible.

Abu Majed, 55, fled with five members of his family to Ramtha from Homs this week, managing to slip out during a two-hour lull in the bombing.

"We feared that we, too, would join the others whose homes had been bombed and shelled and we'd end up under the piles of rubble," the gray-haired man said from a rented apartment in Ramtha, which his family shares with other Syrian refugees.

Abu Majed urged European and U.S. citizens to pressure their governments to save the Syrian people from the regime's brutality.

But diplomacy has so far failed to bring an end to the violence in Syria, which the government blames on armed "terrorists" acting out a foreign conspiracy to destabilize the country.

The U.N. General Assembly voted overwhelmingly Thursday on a nonbinding resolution backing an Arab League plan calling for Assad to step down and strongly condemning human rights violations by his regime.

Russia and China, who vetoed a similar resolution in the Security Council, voted against the General Assembly measure.

In Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton noted Thursday's U.N. vote, but lamented that "in the face of this global condemnation, the regime in Damascus appears to be escalating its assaults on civilians."

"Those who are suffering cannot get access to the humanitarian assistance they need and deserve," she told reporters, adding that the U.S. "will keep working to pressure and isolate the regime, to support the opposition and to provide relief to the people of Syria." She said she would work toward that goal at next week's "Friends of Syria" conference in Tunisia.

Britain and France urged Syria's divided opposition to unite and said it needs more international support to resist the deadly government crackdown.

"What is happening in Syria is appalling," British Prime Minister David Cameron told a joint news conference Friday in Paris with French President Nicolas Sarkozy. "I'm not satisfied that we are taking all the action we can."

"We cannot bring about a Syrian revolution ... if the Syrian revolution does not make an effort to rally together and organize so that we can better help them," Sarkozy said.

Cameron said Britain is sending food rations for 20,000 people and medical supplies for those affected by fighting in Homs and elsewhere. The aid will include emergency drinking water and essential household items for refugees forced to leave their homes because of fighting.

At the hospital in Ramtha, newly installed gates now protect the hospital rooms where wounded Syrians are being treated, guarded by Jordanian security police.

Activist Abu Suhaib, 37, said he and several others were hit with shrapnel after a missile struck an area in Daraa where the men had fled. He lost a foot and had his leg gouged in the attack.

"The Syrian military is targeting buildings and homes with the intention of killing Daraa's citizens," said the bearded man, who would not give his full name for fear of reprisals.

Abu Suhaib said he was moved by activists from one safe house to another inside Daraa until they could slip him over the border and the Jordanian army brought him to Ramtha's hospital.

Abu Majed, at the rented apartment, said that left alone, the Syrian regime would move its "death machine" from one city to the next.

"Assad's last mission is to turn Syria into rubble, nothingness," he said.

'Simpsons' series finale? You've seen it, sort of

Shock! Awe! The Simpsons learn that their neighbors don't think very highly of them on the show's 500th episode.

By Anna Chan

Ay caramba! On Sunday, animated Fox hit "The Simpsons" will air its 500th episode, a milestone that even executive producer Al Jean is a bit surprised about.

When the series first launched in 1989, he had no idea it would become such a long running success. "I'd be lying?if I said I'd be here answering questions about episode 500," Jean told reporters during a conference call Wednesday.

But last fall, the end of "The Simpsons" seemed quite possible when Fox said it couldn't afford the show anymore if the voice actors didn't take big pay cuts. A deal was ultimately reached (the stars reportedly had their compensation reduced by 30 percent) for the show to continue through a 25th season for a total of 559 episodes.

But had things not been hashed out with the talent, there was a plan in place for the end of the Simpsons family saga. And in fact, viewers have already seen what would have been the series finale, according to Jean. And that was?"Holidays of Future Passed," which aired on Dec. 11. It was an episode that looked ahead and (would have) provided closure to longtime fans with its peek at the family 30 years in the future.

Instead of having that episode serve as a bookend to a successful series, it now stands alone and viewers can expect at least 60 episodes to come before Jean and his team have to come up with another tidy way to end things. "I don't know where the end is. I've jokingly said, 'Why not 1,000 (episodes)? Why not 2,000?" he said.

The executive producer also noted he has no plans yet for the series finale. "No, we spent it! Right now there's no clue,"?Jean told reporters.?"It's not a show?like 'Lost' where we're going to hope to answer a fundamental question with our last episode."

One thing he does know, though, is that viewers can rest easy that their favorite characters likely?won't bite it as Maude Flanders did. "People don't want to see us kill off?Grandpa. They want him to be around, they want this universe to sort of?stay roughly the same, just the way Bugs Bunny never killed Elmer Fudd," Jean said.

As for that big episode coming up on Sunday? "The Simpsons" will be marking it withsome controversy. As revealed last month, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will be guest starring on the landmark episode titled "At Long Last Leave," in which the family gets booted from Springfield.

"Obviously he's a controversial figure and that was discussed before we agreed to let him do it," Jean said of Assange's role.?"It's a funny cameo and it makes no judgements about the larger case about him."

Jean said that what the episode will do, though, is offer "a really nice emotional story about the family finding out how their neighbors really feel about them." No surprise, the townsfolks' opinion of the Simpsons?isn't exactly glowing. But it won't be a big bummer.?"There's a lot of little touches marking the milestone in?the way we like to and?at the same time celebrate and mock something," Jean said.

The 500th episode airs Sunday, Feb. 19, at 8 p.m. on Fox.

Military service, even without combat, changes personality and makes vets less agreeable

ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2012) ? It's no secret that battlefield trauma can leave veterans with deep emotional scars that impact their ability to function in civilian life. But new research led by Washington University in St. Louis suggests that military service, even without combat, has a subtle lingering effect on a man's personality, making it potentially more difficult for veterans to get along with friends, family and co-workers.

"Our results suggest that personality traits play an important role in military training, both in the sort of men who are attracted to the military in the first place, and in the lasting impact that this service has on an individual's outlook on life," says study lead author Joshua J. Jackson, PhD, an assistant professor of psychology in Arts & Sciences.

Published in the journal Psychological Science, the study found that men who have experienced military service tend to score lower than civilian counterparts on measures of agreeableness -- a dimension of personality that influences our ability to be pleasant and accommodating in social situations.

The study confirms that the military attracts men who are generally less neurotic, less likely to worry, less likely to be concerned about seeking out novel experiences. When compared with men in civilian pursuits, those entering the military also are more aggressive, more interested in competition than cooperation and less concerned about the feelings of others, the study finds.

"Military recruits are a little less warm and friendly to begin with and the military experience seems to reinforce this -- as after service, men score even lower on agreeableness when compared to individuals who did not go into the military," Jackson says. "Interestingly, this influence appears to linger long after the soldier has re-entered the workforce or returned to college."

Jackson points out that being less agreeable is not always a negative human trait. While it may make it more challenging to maintain positive relationships with friends and romantic partners, it can be seen as a positive influence on career success.

"On the flip side," he says, "people with lower levels of agreeableness are often more likely to fight their way up the corporate ladder and to make the sometimes unpopular decisions that can be necessary for business success."

Either way, this study offers evidence that experiences in basic training and other military service do shape the way people approach the world.

"These changes in personality appear to be small, but they could make a big difference in the lives of those who have served in the military," he says.

Jackson's research is based on a six-year study that tracked the personality traits of a group of young men in German high schools who chose to meet mandatory public service requirements through either military or civilian service.

Co-authored with Felix Thoemmes, Kathrin Jonkmann, Oliver L?dtke and Ulrich Trautwein, all of the University of T?bingen in Germany, the study is among the first to empirically test whether a particular life experience can truly change an individual's personality, something that many psychologists have long considered to be unlikely.

As Jackson explains, psychologists generally view personality as one of the most stable and difficult-to-change human traits. While some studies have tracked small changes in personality over time, such as changes related to the aging process, there is little research on why these changes occur, or on what sorts of life experiences might contribute to the changes.

Jackson's research team saw the military as the perfect laboratory in which to test for personality-changing life experiences.

"The whole military experience is sold as an opportunity for a life-changing transformation," Jackson says. "Recruiting materials of military forces around the world bolster the idea of military experience as being a catalyst for change. For example, recent slogans in the United States, such as 'Be all you can be,' 'Accelerate your life,' and 'Aim high,' all imply that military experiences affect life trajectories.

"It's one of the few situations in life where an individual's daily actions and expectations are completely controlled by someone else. Where, from the moment you wake up in the morning until you go to bed at night, someone is actively working to break down anything that's individual about you and to build up something else in its place."

Researchers tested the men's personalities during high school and re-tested them three times in the six years following either civilian or military service. Not surprisingly, all of the participants scored higher on measures indicative of maturity, such as increased conscientiousness and less neuroticism.

And while the military group did show some increases in measures of agreeableness, the change was much lower than that measured for participants in the civilian service group.

"While the military often promises to 'make a man out of you,' our analysis suggests that much of the advertised post-military increase in maturity can be attributed to normal changes that most young men experience during this stage of their lives," Jackson says.

"And while military service doesn't seem to have much impact on other personality traits, such as levels of anxiety or gregariousness, it appears to have a small but significant influence on measures of agreeableness."

Jackson's findings may offer a new explanation for why military service members tend to differ from civilians in their rates of divorce, longevity, salaries and health issues.

"Often these differences are interpreted in terms of the social opportunities that either exist or don't exist for military members, but rarely is it suggested that military experience changes something about the person, which then influences these outcomes," Jackson says.

"It's not a cut-and-dried issue, but this study shows that changes in personality may be one reason that military service is associated with different rates of important life outcomes, like divorce or occupational attainment."

Is Trophy Hunting A Form of Serial Killing?

"For me and many of the people who contact me to offer their support, killing innocent animals for self-gratification is no different from killing innocent people for self-gratification. By extension, then, trophy hunting--the repeated killing of wild animals--should surely be viewed as serial killing. And in the same moral light humanity's thinking is, I feel beginning to approach such a level of morality."

What is our mission?

Photobucket

Our mission is to banish cruelty and death done in the name recreation ("sports" and trophy). This is not about Veganism as some hunters like to claim because even non-Vegan are disgusted by "sports" hunters, seriously what decent humans would agree with killing animals for "fun"?. It benefits no one and the State Wildlife Agencies continues to rejects deer birth control (which works) because their intention has always been to have an abundance of deer for recreational purpose. Great blood money for the State Agencies and one big thrill after another by the "sportsman" of America as our wildlife suffers and human suffers and die from Deer Vehicle Accidents and Hunting accidents. Do people really believe kill over 6 million deer during deer hunting season is "normal" part of deer biology and the eco-system?. How is it that they manage to kill this many deer year after year if the purpose of hunting is to "reduce" deer population thus deer vehicle accidents. ? How come the most heavily hunted states seems to have the most deer thus the highest deer vehicle accidents.? "Deer Management" is a sham and the State Agencies and recreational hunters DO NOT care about human lives lost in Deer Vehicle Accidents because they, knowing that killing does not work, would have all demanded deer birth control but instead they fear it like the plague and rejects it. DNR and Hunters knows about the ecological principal called the "compensatory rebound" but public does not and that is why the public are fooled into thinking mass killing means reduction and also assuming reduction in Deer Vehicle Accidents. It will be reduced for temporarily but the stock of deer are always replenished in time for the killing season and that is why deer vehicle accidents are the highest during the months of Oct - Dec.

Please open your eyes people the DNR and recreational hunters are not on your side. They are small but very vocal human monsters and lies, euphemistic words and whitewash is what they use in their desperate effort to keep your support. If you or your family member hits a deer and gets injured or dies you think the DNR will finally say "we need deer birth control"? NO. They will reject it and I believe that they like the mangled cars because fear is what keeps the public approval. The public cannot stand the killers on tree stand which can pose danger to themselves, children and pets plus the senseless cruelty to our wildlife but they feel they have no choice because they are being lied to about deer birth control.. DNR and hunters need to get honest and let the public know that deer birth control here, safe and it works BUT honesty is not what they are about, only greed, self gratification, and "power" from the lives of the innocent.

One final thing, how come if lethal deer killing is about "reduction" in many State Wildlife Agencies manual you'll often see the words "fawn recruit", "produce", "fawn crops", "supplement feeding", "food plots", "provide", and "kill predators". Sounds a lot like their intention is to have a large deer herd , even in the expense of human lives from DVA's.

Whitney Houston's Friend Says Cause of Death from Lesbian ...

Whitney Houston, Ex-Husband Bobby Brown & Ex-Assistant/Alleged Gay Lover Robyn Crawford (Right)

By Truthquake.com Staff

Whitney Houston had secret gay relationships and binged on the drugs and alcohol that killed her because she was torn over living a lie, it has been claimed again.

Rumors have been circulating for 30 years that the singer had had a secret lesbian relationships with her ex-assistant Robyn Crawford and Top Gun actress Kelly McGillis, but her friends have now publicly spoken about her sexuality following her death.

Houston?s friend and gay rights activist Peter Tatchell even said her marriage to Bobby Brown was a smokescreen and sham.

?It?s important to tell the truth about this aspect of her life,? he told the Daily Star.

Whitney Houston's Dead Body Being Wheeled Out of Hotel by Police & Coroner

?Whitney was happiest and at her peak in the 1980s when she was with her female partner.

?They were so loved up and joyful together. Perhaps her inability to accept and express her same-sex love contributed to her substance abuse and decline.?

He added: ?She was pressured into the Bobby Brown marriage. It was a disaster. Her life started going downhill soon afterwards.?

The British-based activist did not name the woman but other sources, such as Brown, have said it was Robyn Crawford.

The pair had know each other since Whitney was 16 and Robyn dropped out of Monmouth College to work for the singer.

Just hours after her death, she wrote a Valentine?s Day-themed tribute to Whitney hours after she died, which was published in a U.S. magazine.

It said: ?I first met Whitney when I was 16 and knew right away she was special.

?Whitney was modelling and had peachy-coloured skin and didn?t look like anyone I?d ever met in New Jersey.

?I can?t believe that I?m never going to hug her or hear her laughter again.?

The claims have also been backed up by Houston?s sister-in-law and her ex-bodyguard Kevin Ammons.

Even her former husband Bobby Brown has hinted their marriage was a cover-up for her desire for women. Brown is allegedly bisexual too but did not reveal the information himself.

Brown?s sister Tina Brown said to National Enquirer: ?I saw her with a woman a couple of times.?

And Bobby, 43, wrote in his autobiography that the marriage was was ?doomed from the very beginning. I think we got married for all the wrong reasons. Now, I realize Whitney had a different agenda than I did when we got married.

?I believe her agenda was to clean up her image, while mine was to be loved and have children. The media was accusing her of having a bisexual relationship with her assistant, Robin [sic] Crawford. Since she was the American Sweetheart and all, that didn?t go too well with her image.

?In Whitney?s situation, the only solution was to get married and have kids. That would kill all speculation, whether it was true or not.?

They have one daughter together Bobbi Kristina, 18, who has also dealt with addiction.

Her bodyguard Kevin Ammons wrote in his book about Houston that Robyn slapped Whitney when she saw her flirting with men and was furious when she vowed to marry Brown.

Also, he claimed Houston paid off ex-publicist Regina Brown to keep quiet about her affair with Crawford.

The 48-year-old was found dead in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, Saturday.

The coroner?s office of Los Angeles has not determined the cause of death and are conducting an autopsy on her dead body. However, based on people?s observations of Houston?s heavy drinking the day of her death and several days before, it is believed the alcohol mixed with prescription drugs killed her.

Rumors are swirling around online that Houston was poisoned by members of the Illuminati New World Order since she was reportedly poor and in debt to her record company and other people, and she was murdered because she would be worth more dead than alive.

Houston had spoken out against strange, ?dark? elements within the music industry before her death in an electronic press kit video during her I Look to You tour.

Joe and La Toya Jackson asserted similar claims about the murder of Michael Jackson.

Houston is to be buried at midday on Saturday in New Jersey?s New Hope Baptist Church.

She spoke out about the gay, bisexual and lesbian rumors in 2000, saying: ?I am a mother, not a lesbian. I am not gay.?

It has also been claimed that Houston told friends she ?really wanted to see Jesus? in the days before her death and claimed she had a feeling the end was near for her, according to TMZ.

The Thursday before she died she apparently performed ?Yes Jesus Loves Me? at Tru nightclub in Hollywood and told one of her friends, ?I?m gonna go see Jesus ? I want to see Jesus.?

The next morning, hours before her death, she discussed a Bible passage involving John the Baptist and Jesus when she flashed a big smile and said: ?You know, he?s so cool?I really want to see that Jesus.?

Another source told the website ahe had been telling friends she ?felt like her time was coming.?

FTC Finds Privacy Problems In Children?s Apps, But Suggested Changes Will Impact All

120216mobileappskidsI believe the children are the future. (What, too soon?) But in the case of the new FTC report on mobile applications for kids, which references?the current data handling practices employed by mobile developers, the children?are?the future. They're the future indicators of how our personal information needs to be handled in today's mobile app ecosystem. Although the new report makes?recommendations?specifically?for children's applications, there's obviously an undercurrent of outrage and violation underway now (thanks mainly to?addressgate). People, not just parents, need to control and understand how and why their data is being collected, used, and shared, and what that really means. The question is,?how is this done?

Buenos Aires Food Tour ? LandingStanding

If you have been actively reading our blog, you are probably well aware by now that the way?to my heart is through?my stomach?

? And Buenos Aires has me head over heels in love.

Being the lucky girl that I am, this love affair started within the first 24 hours of arriving in this magical city. Now, I may not be a believer in love at first sight, but love at first bite is a whole different story!

On the second day of our trip, Tony and I were graciously invited to attend a day of eating and drinking our way through the city via Buenos Aires Food Tours. This seemed too good to pass up!

Before I start divulging into the gluttonous day we spent with Buenos Aires Food Tours, I will give you a little background on the company:

Buenos Aires Food Tours was started up by ethnic dining expert Graciela (whom also founded Miami Culinary Tours) roughly a year ago and provides culinary walking tours around the San Telmo, La Boca, and Recoleta neighborhoods (a.k.a. Barrios).

This unique tour group, however, is not just about food.? Aside from pigging out on all the regional delicacies, they also want their customers to gain knowledge about the local community, the history of the city, and the beautiful architecture that defines Buenos Aires.

In addition to the distinctive approach on their tours, Buenos Aires Food Tours got exceptionally good TripAdvisor reviews.? After everything that I learned and read about this company, I was dying to see them in action.

We signed up for the San Telmo Food Tour, which was right in the neighborhood we were hostelling in.? To be honest, I wasn?t sure what to expect going into the day.? I had never done a food tour before but, from what I gathered in my research, I imagined a BUNCH of walking around the city, followed by sampling small bites to eat at street vendors and markets.

As it turned out, it was so much different than what I expected? And so much better!

As I previously mentioned, I expected the day to involve a lot of walking, followed by mini samples of various street food.? Awesome? Yes.? Right up my ally? You betcha! But what about this scenario:

Our tour guide, Jorge

A full day of eating wonderful food and drinking luscious Argentinean wines at romantic local restaurants.? The day is peaceful, the ambiance is casual, and the company is superb.

In addition, there is an incredibly warm and knowledgeable local tour guide (and avid foodie) educating you on the local history and traditions as he orders more and more ?must-tries? for the table.

Now, I am not sure about you but this second scenario is my idea of a dream day.? And that is exactly what we got on our Buenos Aires Food Tours.

Our tour guide, Jorge, started the day off by walking our group through Mercado San Telmo to teach us about the notorious cuts of meat in Argentina. During our time in the Mercado, he had us interacting with quirky butchers who were enthusiastic to show us the ropes to the world of meat, where no part of the pig or cow goes uneaten!

Yup. That's brains all right.

?

The butcher playing with beef tongue!

We then moved onto our first restaurant of the day, Pasaje Solar, which is situated in a charming house from the late nineteenth century.? Our group got seated in the romantic outdoor patio area that was surrounded by flowers and exposed brick from the house.? I immediately began to feel tranquil and in my element.

Jorge ordered a bottle of Argentinean Elementos Torrontes white wine for the table and that provided just enough lubrication for us to become BFF?s with the rest of our wonderful tour group.

The tour group foodies!

There was Marv and Margie, the power couple from New York taking advantage of a 2 week vacation. Despite them being Yankees fans, we somehow managed to really enjoy their company?

Then there was Stephen and Anna, a lovely European couple passionate about travel. He was from England and she was from Italy? so of course Tony had to bombard her with his questions and love for all things Italian.

The table conversation was flowing freely (along with the wine) and just as I started thinking the day couldn?t get any better, the food started to arrive at the table. Since there were a TON of traditional dishes consumed over the course of the meal, I figure it will be easiest to break the menu down a little bit below:

Pickled eggplant: This was our first dish.? A little appetizie if you will (I love my food abbreviations). This dish was a perfect balance of sweet and vinegary and tasted refreshing (yet hearty) smothered on top of the delicious table bread.

Pickled eggplant

Pizza with black olive dough: Yes, this was a pizza by any standards ? melted cheese, tomato, etc.? But black olive dough?! This took this dish up so many notches it?s not even fair. Why haven?t we thought of this back in the states? Dear Dominos, this is your calling!

Pizza with black olive dough

Fried eggplant with tomatoes and cheese: Like the black olive pizza dough, having eggplant substitute regular pizza dough simply rocked. And it was fried.? Enough said. I think this is how I am going to make pizzas from now on.

Fried eggplant with tomatoes and cheese

Fried flank steak caprese: Okay noooow we have steak in replace of the dough.? Argentina is getting a little crazy on me! ?This was soooo darn good.

Fried flank steak caprese

Spanish Tortilla with red sausage:? From studying abroad in Spain, I have had many a fried tortilla, but for those of you who are unfamiliar with it, think of it as a thick potato and egg omelet.? Delicious.? Now take that and add succulent Argentinean red sausage.? Let?s just say that Tony was in heaven.

Spanish Tortilla with red sausage

Some additional treats ordered for the table included fried chard as well as stuffed mushrooms with parsley.? Both of these dishes were great, but the five dishes above were by far my favorites of the meal.

Fried chard

Stuffed mushrooms with parsley

When we were finished with our meal at Pasaje Solar, I thought the tour was finished for the day? And if it was, I would have left completely satisfied.

But then Jorge announced that we needed to move on to the restaurant where we would be eating LUNCH.

Como?!?!

I just had myself an Italian/Argentinean feast? Now you want me to eat more?!

But who was I to say no?

Resto del Viejo Hotel

So on we ventured to Resto del Viejo Hotel for lunch.

This restaurant was a fancy-pants restaurant that was decorated with stunning chandeliers, beautiful paintings, and an old fashioned bar.

Once again, Jorge ordered us up some fabulous wine for the table to start the meal off right.

I had a glass (okay, maybe two) of the Wayna 2007 Malbec, which I was obsessed with and Tony enjoyed a glass of the Altavista 2010 Torrontes.

Now we aren?t big white wine drinkers back home, but Argentina knows how to whip up some delicious white concoctions.

This wine was exquisite!

For lunch we gorged on veal milanese with homemade potato chips and grilled pork loin.? It is pretty clear at this point how Argentina got such a great reputation for its meat.

Veal milanese with homemade potato chips

Grilled pork loin

For dessert, Jorge had the waitor bring us out sweet potato jelly with cheese cubes.? The dish came out, and I gotta say, it did NOT look appetizing.? However, I am a big believer that you should always try a dish once before turning your nose up to it.

Sweet potato jelly with cheese cubes

Luckily, it turned out to be pretty good.

Now, if I was given the option between ordering this again or ordering a big chocolate brownie sundae, I would without a doubt order the sundae! ?But I was pleasantly surprised by how much I like the jellied sweet potato.

The meal finished up and the day was winding down.? At this point, I am mildly buzzed, ridiculously full, and loving life? And Jorge. I was also about 10 minutes away from curling up in a dark alley to take a nap.

Jorge must have seen the dopiness in the groups? eyes? and he combated it in the most perfect way?

Coffee time!

For the last part of the tour, Jorge marched us into Bar Plaza Dorrego, which is the oldest bar in Buenos Aires (established in 1881) for some espresso. This wooden paneled bar has maintained its old school charm with pictures of celebrities (who used to stop by) hanging on its walls and names carved into the wooden chairs and benches.

Bar Plaza Dorrego

The draft beer and coffee also comes with a side of roasted peanuts and its completely kosher to throw your leftover shells on the floor, adding to its rustic flare.? It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tony and I had an outstanding time on our Buenos Aires Food Tour.? It was a relaxing (and gluttonous!) day filled with great food, great wine, and great people.? Jorge was an amazing tour guide and his enthusiasm about Argentinean cuisine was contagious.? The day turned out to be completely different than what I had imagined, and I was grateful for that.

If you have a chance to travel to Buenos Aires, book a food tour immediately!? You will not be disappointed.? It?s such a great way to see the city and learn more about the culture of Buenos Aires ? Plus who can pass up the opportunity to eat and drink ALL DAY LONG?

I sure can?t!

Disclosure: Tony and I were sponsored guests of Buenos Aires Food Tours and thus did not pay for?our tour.?As always, our opinions are our own and unbiased. If we hate it? you will know.

Downton Abbey, Season 2

As always, Slate readers have made some smart observations in the comments. Marie Ledger detects the ?sweet scent of irony in Lord Grantham falling for the parlor maid,? what with him being so harsh on Sibyl for pledging her troth to the chauffeur. Of course, however unromantic Sibyl and Tom Branson?s relationship may be, they have at least known each other for several years, and they have some shared interests, including agitating for the downfall of international capitalism and hip caresses. I wonder, did Lord G. decide that he could countenance Sibyl?s class-spanning liaison after those furtive seconds with Jane convinced him that love sees no uniform?

?7 public funding available for research to deliver better fruit and vegetables

7 public funding available for research to deliver better fruit and vegetables [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 9-Feb-2012

Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council

A new research initiative launched today (09 February) aims to bring academic researchers together with industry in order to deliver bigger yields of better quality fruits and vegetables for the consumer through more sustainable farming practices.

Fruits and vegetables are a vitally important part of a healthy diet. Increasing yields and reducing waste will be crucial if we are to ensure global food security, providing a healthy, nutritious and affordable diet to a growing global population.

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) will be providing up to 7 million funding via the Horticulture and Potato Initiative for research projects with both an academic and an industrial partner. Additional funding will be provided by the industrial partners themselves and by the Scottish Government and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

One of the areas where the Initiative will focus is on helping growers adapt to a changing climate. Many varieties of the food crops we grow in the UK have been tailored to very specific local climate conditions. This means that even slight changes in growing seasons, water availability and weather extremes could cause dramatic reductions in production if not countered with research expertise.

The initiative will also emphasise the need for any increases in production to be sustainable. Increasing demand from a global population estimated to reach nine billion by 2050 will require increases in production, but this must be done on proportionally less land and with less water, fertiliser and other inputs.

Dr Celia Caulcott, BBSRC Director of Innovation and Skills said "Any research initiative to improve fruits and vegetables should start with the end product what do we as consumers want to eat. That is why we're excited about this initiative. We can combine the scientific expertise of academic researchers with the real-world expertise of industry in the hope of delivering bigger yields of better quality fruit and veg for us all to buy"

The 7 million research fund will be available through two calls, the first of which opens today.

Tom Taylor, Chief Executive of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) said: "Collaboration between researchers and industry is essential for the development of practical business solutions. This BBSRC initiative will help focus the research and development community towards addressing real cross sector opportunities and challenges."
