Tailor your resume, cover letter for each job application

When the job market is more competitive, little things in job search become big things. If you can imagine a hiring manager sorting through a few hundred r?sum?s, something as simple as a single typo can send yours directly to the wastebasket beside their desk or into the recycle bin on their computer desktop.

While networking will always produce the best results, taking time to ensure your collateral materials are error-free is a must. R?sum?s and cover letters, in particular, must be well written and pristine.

In addition to being typo-free, both your cover letter and your r?sum? must be specifically written for each job opening and/or employer you are sending it to. Here are a few rules of good cover writing:

  • Determine if the cover letter is for an application, prospecting or networking.
  • Ensure you state your reasons for contacting the employer or networking contact.
  • Always do research on who you are contacting and adapt your cover letter accordingly.
  • Never rely on a form letter or send the same cover letter to more than one employer or networking contact.
  • Always be honest and always be positive.
  • Be specific.

In addition to these simple rules, be yourself. A common mistake in a cover letter is to try to impress the reader with words and terms that are not usually in your vocabulary.

Keep in mind that you are who you are and you offer what you offer. Trying to be someone else will be easy to discover and using words or terms that are not ?you? could lead to setting yourself up for future failure. Employers want to know who you are and what you have to offer. Simply put, just be yourself and let come what may.

Here are a few rules for good r?sum? writing:

  • Start with a summary or a professional profile that describes who you are and what you have to offer as it relates to the potential position.
  • Describe your strengths, experience and your accomplishments in briefly stated bullet points; no more than 25 words in each; and no more than 12 bullet points.
  • Quantify your accomplishments and use strong action verbs as much as possible.
  • Include your skills and education/training, if they relate to the potential job.
  • Adapt your r?sum? to each position you are interested in.
  • Always be honest and always be positive.

Proofread your cover letter and r?sum? several times and ask others you trust to proofread them as well. Ask for honest feedback and for referrals to anyone who might be able to help you in your job search.

A more competitive job market requires more attention to detail as little things end up becoming big things. Don?t let something as simple as a typo send your cover letter or r?sum? to the wastebasket or recycle bin.
