Gullah Geechee group invited to march in Obama inaugural parade

The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission was chosen to participate in the 57th inaugural parade in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 21.

Commission chairman Ronald Daise said the group's participation means "we can truly take pride and hold our heads high with the realization that our heritage has shaped American culture."

A float is being designed to reflect Gullah Geechee culture and folk life, said Michael Allen, a partnership specialist for the National Parks Service.

Daise and Marquetta Goodwine, both natives of St. Helena Island, will represent Beaufort County in the parade.

The four-state corridor stretches from Wilmington, N.C., to St. Augustine, Fla.
