The Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) submitted a two-year environmental work plan to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, as part of its efforts to secure a license to develop the 600MW Susitna-Watana Hydroelectric Project.

Obliging a recent appeal by the State Governor Sean Parnell, the submitted plan outlines 58 environmental studies to the commission.

Parnell had proposed a $95m budget towards the project's environmental field analysis, engineering design and geotechnical investigations.

Located on the Susitna River, the project will comprise of a 750ft tall dam and associated power-producing facility on the Susitna River.

The project calls for an estimated investment of $4.76bn and can meet majority of the electricity demand of the Alaskan Railbelt region.

AEA public outreach liaison Emily Ford was quoted by Anchorage Daily News as saying that various agencies and stakeholders were a part of the efforts to develop a study plan.

"Everyone's really worked hard to develop a study plan that helps to balance the need to for long-term power and also environmental concerns," Ford said.
