President Barack Obama raised $114 million in August, compared to $111 million for GOP contender Mitt Romney. With less than two months to go until the general election, Reuters reports on the brand new fundraising numbers of both candidates as they gear up for the stretch run to the White House.
Between the two men, Obama and Romney raised $225 million in August, an amount of money that could buy many things for ordinary Americans.
236: The number of private islands that can be bought for $225 million. Tom's Harbor Keys in Florida are two small private islands for sale at $1.9 million together. As a collective, someone could buy these islands 118 times for the amount of money raised in August. Combined, the keys make 46 acres of undeveloped subtropical paradise for anyone who buys them.
196: The number of ultra-rare pennies to buy for the cumulative fundraising amount. A 1792 Silver Center penny, one of the first minted in the United States, sold for $1.15 million at an auction last April. A similar large penny sold for close to $3 million a year before that.
22.5 billion: The number of Ty Beanie Babies called "Dippy the Rabbit " one could have bought from Amazon.com in September 2011. Cracked.com did a survey of items on Amazon that sold for one penny and "Dippy the Rabbit" was one of them. The collectable was one of eight items for sale at the time for a ridiculously low price that was substantially cheaper than shipping costs.
1,184: The number of homes, at the nationwide median price, that can be had for $225 million. The median price for a home in America is $190,000, according to RealEstateABC.com. Reduce the price to a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home for $90,000 and 2,500 houses could be purchased. Instead, the money raised by candidates will go towards advertising, travel and staff costs.
58,593,750: The number of gallons of gas that can be bought at average prices as of Sept. 3. At 30 miles to the gallon, one car could travel more than 1.75 billion miles with that amount of gas. A trip to Jupiter and back is possible as the gas giant is a maximum of 581 million miles from Earth.
30.6 billion: The number of matches to buy from a dealer on Amazon. For $7.35, someone can buy 50 matchbooks that have 20 matches in them.
321.4 million: The number of meals that can be bought on the Dunning family's strict budget, per person. The family of six bought $400 of food for one month and fed everyone for 70 cents per meal per person last February, according to AndersonCooper.com. At that cost per meal, everyone in the United States (population 310 million) could be fed once based upon the amount of money raised in one month by Obama and Romney.
