New zeolite material may solve diesel shortage

Thursday, February 2, 2012

World fuel consumption is shifting more and more to diesel at the expense of gasoline. A recently published article in Nature Chemistryby a research team at Stockholm University and the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain presents a new porous material that evinces unique properties for converting gasoline directly into diesel. The material has a tremendously complex atomic structure that could only be determined with the aid of transmission electron microscopy.

The aluminosilicate, which has been named ITQ-39, belongs to the zeolite class and has a porous structure that enables sufficiently small molecules to pass through it. On their way through, they can react with other molecules and create a desired product. The new material has channels of varying size and shape in different directions. These variously shaped channels entail that a molecule that is transported inside the material can be limited in different ways, depending on the direction it travels.

ITQ-39 is the most complex zeolite material ever discovered. Its structure was determined by a research team at Stockholm University headed by Professor Xiaodong Zou, with the help of electron crystallography. On an electron microscope, extremely small crystals can be studied, in this case down to a couple of nanometers. What makes ITQ-39 such a complicated material is that, unlike most other crystalline material, it is not perfectly ordered. The material studied has a type of chaotic order. To be able to understand the material in the smallest detail requires both a model of how the atoms are arranged in the minimal ordered areas and a model of how these domains are then linked together into crystals. This disorder can be studied with the aid of high-resolution images taken with an electron microscope that can then serve as a basis for creating a model of the atomic structure of the material. This is what researchers Tom Willhammar, Junliang Sun, Wan Wei, Peter Oleynikov, Daliang Zhang, and Xiaodong Zou at Stockholm University present in the latest issue of the scientific journal Nature Chemistry.

The material, which was produced by a research team headed by Professor Avelino Corma in the Polytechnic University of Valencia, has proven to be an excellent catalytic converter for turning gasoline into diesel. This is a process that has become ever more important with the marked growth in the demand for diesel in recent years.

This forum is for OOC discussion about existing roleplays.

Please post all "Players Wanted" threads in the Roleplayers Wanted forum!

This topic is an Out Of Character part of the roleplay, ?Predator: Threat to Honor?. Anything posted here will also show up there.

Forum for completely Out of Character (OOC) discussion, based around whatever is happening In Character (IC). Discuss plans, storylines, and events; Recruit for your roleplaying game, or find a GM for your playergroup.
Hello everyone and welcome to my RP, Predator: Threat to Honor.

This RP is designed to allow Yautja fans to become the creature they love and step into the shoes of the most feared alien Hunters in the Universe. Armed with all the weaponry and cunning of the mighty warriors, you will stalk, track, trap, and hunt your prey with all your might to bring honor to both yourself and your Clan.

But before the Hunt can begin I must set some ground rules and make certain necessary understandings clear.

As stated in the Rules section, respect to your fellow players is a priority and just like a Yautja I will not tolerate any dishonorable behavior from any of my fellow Role Players (Clan Members). So please be respectful of each other and if you take issue with the way someone is performing then bring your concerns to my attention and I will review them and if necessary discuss them with the one in question. Courtesy is a simple thing to master when you know how, and as I extend it to all of you I would ask you do the same for both myself and for your fellow players.

I am an easy enough person to get along with so please do not be shy about asking me questions either in a PM or in the OOC threads. Discussions about the Hunt will be semi-regular events as we progress through the story and I will challenge you all at every step of the way and push your characters to their limits. It will be up to you to decide the appropriate actions that will bring honor to your name and that of your Clan when the time comes.

As far as game play in the RP goes, think of it as an open world 3rd person adventure. The Clan will do everything it can to uncover the truth about why this once lush hunting ground has suddenly become a violent and almost inhospitable place. Not only that, but you may encounter Bad Bloods along the way as well as other threats from the local and non-local (spoiler) wildlife.

As far as characters go, I am not too picky about details so long as they are well thought out and thorough. You don't have to write me a ten page essay on the bio of your character so long as you can at least describe all the necessary information. Do try to make it to about 4 paragraphs though. That should be easy enough.

Well that is about it! If you have any questions feel free to post here in the OOC or send me a PM regarding your concerns. I'll see you inside!

Lakers dominate Bobcats in 106-73 win

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Having polished off their second subpar opponent in a row, the Los Angeles Lakers are turning their attention to a sore spot ? the road.

Kobe Bryant scored 24 points, Andrew Bynum added 20, and the Lakers beat slumping Charlotte 106-73 on Tuesday night in their final home game before beginning their annual Grammy trip on Friday at Denver.

The Lakers have been a dominant 11-2 at home, but are just 2-7 away from Staples Center.

"We just got to do our job, that's all. Go out, play hard, play physical and rebound the ball," Bryant said. "These road losses that we've had, the consistent factor has been teams getting on the offensive boards against us and we have to do a much better job of that."

Bynum had 11 rebounds, while Pau Gasol had 10 points and Andrew Goudelock keyed a big night for the bench with 12 points as the Lakers' reserves outscored the Bobcats' bench 48-30. Bryant, Fisher and Metta World Peace sat out the entire fourth quarter, when Bynum and Gasol each played less than five minutes.

"They played extremely well," Bryant said of the bench. "It's on them to make the most of it and if they don't, I have to come back in there, Pau has to come back in there, Andrew has to come back in there, and we have to play the whole second half or whatever the case is."

It was the Lakers' biggest victory against the Bobcats, who had beaten Los Angeles in eight of their previous 11 meetings. The Lakers have now topped the 100-point mark in each of their last two wins after failing to do so in 13 consecutive games.

Gerald Henderson scored 14 points in his return after a two-game absence because of a lower back contusion for the Bobcats, who fell to 1-11 on the road and 3-19 overall with their ninth consecutive loss. Derrick Brown added 12 points and Kemba Walker 12 coming off his triple-double against Washington on Saturday. Boris Diaw added 11.

"We've got a horrible record and we're trying to make our way back up," Henderson said. "We're starting to get guys back healthy. In fact, it seems like every game we get a new guy back. So hopefully, as we get more acclimated to each other, things will start improving."

The Bobcats were well-rested, not having played since that three-point loss, but that didn't help the league's worst team.

"It's been hard, but we're a very young club and we're in a rebuilding mode, so there's basically nothing you can do," coach Paul Silas said. "When I took over last year in December, we had about five or six of the players we have on the team right now. So it's been tough. My thing is, I love winning. And it's been hard on me, very difficult."

The rout was well under way in the first quarter, when Bryant racked up 18 points in 10? minutes and the Lakers led 30-18. He had six more points in the second quarter and the Lakers went into halftime ahead, 60-36.

Bryant helped turn a five-point lead into 20 points in a 26-11 spurt over the end of the first quarter and start of the second with eight points, while Goudelock added seven and Bynum six. The Bobcats actually outscored Los Angeles in the third, 22-13, as Bryant went scoreless, but they still trailed 73-58.

"I didn't like the third quarter and how we allowed them to come back in the game," Gasol said. "But I really liked the fourth quarter where our bench really got going, made simple plays, moved the ball, found the open shooters and it got a lot better for us."

With Bryant on the bench the entire fourth, soon joined by Bynum, the Lakers' reserves put on a 3-point shooting clinic. They reeled off seven consecutive treys to push their lead to 98-70. Troy Murphy had hit three 3s, Jason Kapono chipped in two, and Goudelock and Barnes had one each. Murphy finished with 12 points and Barnes 10.

"We got a lot of shooters on this team, with our second group especially," Goudelock said. "They can stretch out the floor with Troy Murphy and Kapono obviously, and we got Bynum down low, so they can't really double team because if they do, they really have to pick their poison."

Bryant has bestowed the nickname "Mini Mamba" on Goudelock.

"It's a very big compliment, especially coming from the real Mamba," the rookie said.

World Peace got his second straight start in place of Barnes, but he wasn't a factor with two points, two rebounds, two assists and four fouls in 23 minutes.

Notes: Lakers coach Mike Brown said the team has inquired about Orlando G Gilbert Arenas, a free agent. "We've called to see what his status is. That's it," he said. Brown said there's no plans to bring Arenas in for a workout. "I have not talked to him, I have not watched any tape on him. It's really just conversation," he said. ... The Lakers' previous biggest win against Charlotte was 11 points in January 2005. ... Reserve Lakers G Steve Blake, out with broken cartilage in his ribs, has been cleared to run on a treadmill, but there's no timetable for his return. ... Asked about Blake Griffin's dunk for the Clippers a night earlier, Brown said: "It was fantastic."

No charges for airmen who posed around casket

Air Force Times

In an August photo, airmen surround an open casket with another airman posed with a noose around his neck and chains across his body.

By Jeff Black, msnbc.com

The Air Force has concluded there was ?no criminal conduct? by airmen who posed around an open casket with another airman inside pretending to be dead.

The photo, which first came to light on Dec. 13 in the Air Force Times, drew outrage from military commanders, military wives, widows and others who saw it as mocking deceased service members.

??Da Dumpt, Da Dumpt ? Sucks 2 Be U? was scribbled at the bottom of the photo.

Rather than criminal charges, the airmen involved in the picture received administrative punishment because their conduct ?brought discredit to both the military and themselves,? Col. Gregory Reese, commander of the 37th Training Group, said in news release sent to msnbc.com. The Air Force said it does not disclose details of administrative actions due to privacy concerns.

Read Monday?s Air Force Times story

??The investigation indicated that the photo was intended by those who took it to remind the students that they could be killed if they failed to pay attention while loading and unloading aircraft,? Reese said.

The service members in the picture were airmen with the 345th Training Squadron at Fort Lee, Va., where they learn to load and unload aircraft. Their unit is a detachment from a command at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, which issued the news release about the punishment.

The photo, it turned out, was a sort of unofficial class picture in which ?creativity got ahead of common sense,? Gerry Proctor, 37thTraining Wing spokesman, told msnbc.com.

After the photo became public, Air Force Secretary Michael Donley, expressed concern that the photo might cause more turmoil for families of fallen troops.

"Such behavior is not consistent with our core values, and it is not representative of the Airmen I know. It saddens me that this may cause additional grief to the families of our fallen warriors,? Donley told? the Air Force Times.

In response to the photo, 37th Training Wing commander, Col. Eric Axelbank issued a wing-wide policy that requires all class photography and memorabilia?to be?reviewed by squadron commanders.

Proctor told msnbc.com that with the investigation complete and administrative punishment handed out, the Air Force considers the case closed.
